Oh, I forgot to mention that after salting it i put it in a salt bath for about 15 minutes.

The problem that I always had with a simple staking and salting method on the interior side was the the eventual flaking of scales on the outside. I'd definitely try a commercial method/chemical over just using salt. Maybe the scales should be stripped at the beginning, and then just rely on the pattern that is leff over?
