For those shooting Sharps in black powder, 405 gr lead, what is your realistic max distance you feel good about with open sights?

Tangs are great, but not real useful or responsible for hunting. I've practiced with semi-buckhorn sights out to 150 yards range with full confidence, but have yet to fire on an elk.

I have a sharps tanger but really am into my front stuffer lately. I'm able to hit milk jugs to 300 from a solid setup in calm and bright conditions. I'm working dope beyond that once I get back home from work. 27482082143_920a7cef6d_c.jpg

If the light fails, that can drop to 50 yards.

Hope this picture helps.

Yeah, the sight picture doesn't change much at all with my 45-70 from 100 to 200 yards. And that's within my abilities & idea of ethics.

These things are remarkably accurate - with proper skills & tangs, one can hit a stop sign-size target at 800 -1000 yards. But that can mean 80 feet of drop. So, on an elk, no.
