About nine months ago I woke up on a Sunday with no hearing in my left ear....... Hadn't been shooting, no blows to the head, no visable issue with my ear..... Called my family doctor - got in to see her on Tuesday....... gave me a pack of very strong steroids....... took them that week...... got in contact with an ear-nose-throat doctor and made an appointment because the steroids were having no effect and i thought a specialist might be able to offer more info....... finished the steroid pack on a monday with still no real hearing improvement...... went to work on tuesday and got sicker than hell..... my boss drove me to the hospital where the treated me for possible heart issues (no heart issue btw) and dehydration ...... spent the night and the next morning the doctor told me i had the lowest B12 level they had ever seen...... so a b12 shot and three bags of saline and i'm on my way home....... but still no hearing

I get to the ear specialist and get checked out - he injected in to my ear another steroid,,,,,,,,,,, he said it was probably a long shot because the steroids need to be administered as quickly as possible to have any effect..... this was 10 days from when the hearing loss happened! we waited a week and went back in and got another injection in the ear drum....... still no improvement........ went last week for another check up and the hearing loss seems to be permanent ......... i have been putting cbd oil in to see if that helps - so far nothing......

So the real reason i started this post..... if you are 40 years old, or older, you need to have an ENT (Ears - Nose - Throat) doctor!!! See them regularly and if you have a sudden loss of hearing - tell them you MUST SEE THEM NOW!!!!!!! Have them check you out the day it happens and get the eardrum injection!!!!! DO NOT WAIT!!!!!! Had I done this - I would still be able to hear - but since i didn't really know what was going on - I waited......... don't make this same mistake

As shooters, we subject ourselves to noise well above the normal OSHA limits....... wear hearing protection at the range and in the field........ IT SUCKS NOT TO BE ABLE TO HEAR!!!!!!!!

Hope this might help someone!!

God Bless

Can’t relate to the sudden loss...(hope things get worked out for you), but I Have a bit it tinnitus from too muck rock and roll....in the quiet woods I can’t really enjoy it because of the mild ringing...

don’t blast your ears kids...

That happened to me a few years back. Woke up and could not hear a single thing out of my right ear. Went to the doctor and they laid me down and poured some sort of warm ear wax solvent down in there. After 20 minutes or so she came back in and went to town with a spray bottle that had a specialized tip to reach down into the ear canal. The globs of wax that were blasted out of there were unbelievable. Walked away with hearing fully restored and haven't had a problem since.

Figured I'd share just in case a simple, deep wax blockage hasn't been ruled out in your case?

edit: just re-read, you said 9 months ago, not 9 days. Assuming by now a simple blockage has been ruled out.

I feel your pain, I was fortunate to have an ENT and with a giant dose of steroids recovered my hearing. Typically you only get a certain amount back. I was fortunate. More common than you think. Great advice

Both my family doctor and the ENT checked..... ears were clean to the eardrum.... That condition is what both looked for first.... very good point!!! Thanks B

On a side note, the high doses of steroids can cause a very slow form of cataract I have found out. If you are more sensitive to glare than before worth checking out.

I had this happen a few years ago and was misdiagnosed locally. That doc put me on steroids which had many adverse side effects. Ended up going to the Mayo Clinic. The first thing that doctor did was strike a tuning fork, spin it around, and press the handle to the bone right behind my ear.....I could hear it.
What I had was Otosclerosis which is a calcification of the Stapes bone that conducts the sound to your eardrum and auditory nerve. I scheduled surgery immediately. They went in through the ear canal, zapped the stapes bone with a laser and vaporized it. Then they graft in a tiny ceramic piston with some flesh from behind my ear. Wala...I could hear when I woke up. Not perfectly to this day but not too bad. Make sure your auditory nerve is actually toast before assuming you cannot be fixed.

Had the same happen to me. Some of mine came back, but constant ringing. They diagnosed me with Minnears disease. You young guys, don’t f.... around. Always use hearing protection even when hunting. You will pay later in life and it’s a bitch.

I lost my hearing in my right ear due to a medical episode. I was in my mid 40’s. It was very frustrating to determine where sound was coming from. Turkey hunting was frustrating but I overcame this disability and modified how i setup on a bird. Certain things that you took for granted will be a challenge but you can over come and adapt.
Good luck
