Tikka in 284 win

Played with 175 lrab yesterday. Seems like should not be a problem in the tikka mag either. Can’t wait for the parts to show up.

I love how the native .284 Win is making a comeback. My McGowan barrel should be here soon and I can't wait to put it to work.

I had a Tikka in 7mm-08 that I thought long and hard about having rechambered to .284 Win, but ultimately my buddy talked me out of that rifle and I started from scratch with a Savage LW Storm.

Yea, mine is going on a switch barrel Tikka I’m setting up. I hate the idea of $400 for another bolt. I figure a .284 is about perfect t Max out a .308 bolt face on a Tikka.

I’m not in the magnum camp anymore.

Decided to give the original stock a try this season. Working on a load. Takes time as no loads published by either powder or bullet manufactures for this setup. So far 175 ABLR over R23 is very promising. Interesting to note that the barrel speeded up around 80 FPS over approximately 100 rounds since new. Very happy so far.

Looks great. I'm planning on basically the same build (though probably a 25" barrel). Do you know if it was a SAAMI spec chamber for the Peterson brass, or are you neck turning for a tighter chamber? I've got a bunch of Norma brass with 0.315" loaded necks and I've read that Peterson is similar, and it looks like the SAAMI chamber should work for both.

The 284 case is awesome in the tikka. Mines a 6.5-284, but same idea. Switch barrel Tikkas are awesome, having to buy a magnum bolt is not.

Agreed wyo - just sucks I can’t find a local smith who will install my WTO switch lug!

I can’t see a reason to buy the mag bolt. 284 will do anything reasonable. I have a CM, so can’t justify the 6.5 flavor, but I’ve always wanted one.

I’m getting 2813 fps with the 175 gr ABLR from the 23” tube without an issue, the performanceI I was looking for. I think it may be the optimal speed range for the heavy for the caliber eldx, ablr sort of bullets that should help avoid explosive performance at close while maintaining enough velocity at extended range. Will see how it works out in the field.

That is about what I get with a long throated 22” 7 saum tikka so that is pretty cool.

It looks like the long throated 284w is not that far behind the SAUM, probably on par with the 280AI when both loaded to the tikka mag length. Makes it a great alternative especially considering recently improved brass availability.

I’m wishing my new Tikka build had been a long throated 284 instead of the 280ai. I’m putting a lot of bullet where powder should be.

that’s where I’m at. Mentally, they’re the same. I just hate not maxing a cartridge out.

it is nice to have factory ammo though

I keep going back and forth in my head. I’m not sure the gain from a 162 Eld from a 284 is really worth the effort/cost from a 147 out of a 6.5.
