Many of the retailers won’t accept returns on bear spray and the airlines won’t let you fly with bear spray even if it is in your checked bag.

If you drive to where you hunt it’s not a big deal as you can drive back with it and use it on your next hunt I know the alternative is to bring a pistol and not use spray and that’s typically what I’ve done.

What do many of you out of state hunters do with unused bear spray? Seems like there could or should be a service for people to buy and return unused bear spray, or get a portion of you money back. I would think this would be especially useful in areas where there are a lot of tourists around the national parks. Perhaps it’s a liability and that’s why retailers won’t accept returns. Just curious.

Stayed at a vrbo in Montana before doing a 30K trail run. Bought bear spray in bozeman and took it out of the package before I got to my VRBO house. Got there and in a cabinet was 8 cans. There were 9 when I left.

Would be great to see a program put together to repurpose, but Im sure the manufacturers of these sprays would not want that as sales would sharply decline......

PS - If any of you have a vrbo in bear country, please put a note on your listing that tells your guests there are bear sprays in your house for borrow, etc.

I stayed at an AirBNB a few years back that had a can of spray the owners said we could use. It was nice that they offered it to us, but they didn’t tell us until after we checked in. Like you some of the guys had already purchased spray and taken it out if the packaging before they arrived.

Just make sure someone doesnt give you the inert stuff. I would hate to know how many people are carrying that around.

I worked at a place that sold it and over 9 years, I would guess that I had to stop about 100 people from buying it thinking it was the real stuff. Who knows how many I didnt catch.

I flew into Glacier Park a couple weeks ago and the airport had a bear spray rental program. Rent it from a little store by baggage claim and drop it in a box by the check-in counters. Thought that was a good idea.

I thought about doing it, but ended up waiting to see if there was any left in the AirBnB. Checked the coat closet and there were half a dozen cans in there.
