Like others have said, a good 30 cal is real hard to beat if you’re looking to keep it ultra light. If wanting to step up in power in any meaningful way, you have to go to at least a 35 cal and either carry a heavier rifle, or sacrifice a lot of trajectory, or both. If you do your part hunting to a good distance and shoot well with a strong bullet, even a less than 30 cal can put the lights out like a switch.

Carry a rifle that you love to carry but don’t make the hunt about the rifle.
