West Side of Cascades Elk Hunt

If you need an elevation check, I normally hunt at 5000 to 6000 feet in the early season in WA state. For the past two years, I've hunted the early season in WA and the middle to end of SEP in either MT or ID. The bloodsuckers in WA outnumbered the other state's bugs by a huge margin. The WA...

    Elk down, now what?

Call now and determine the nearest wild game processing shop, check their prices (yes, you're at their mercy during elk season), and, confirm their hours. Ask if they can be contacted for boned out meat drop off after duty hours and/or on the weekends. Also, ask how long they will take to...

West Side of Cascades Elk Hunt

Are you guys kidding me, LOL... The skeetos and the tiny black gnats will eat your face off in the early season in WA on the W side of the Cascades in "most" years. They will absolutely ruin a hunt if you don't have your body covered with a facemask, long sleeved shirts.... even gloves. I'm...

    Scent Killer...who uses it?

I do the same. I think it's more psychological (for me) than anything else. I do avoid any scented cleanliness products while hunting. I use scent free toothpaste or baking powder, and, scent free hand sanitizer.. Nothing covers human scent. If the wind shifts, big brown is gone :)

    begginers bugle

Good choice.. really. I've been bowhunting elk for over 30 years and if I would have found "Elknut" way back then, I'd have many more racks on my wall. Best of luck to you this fall flatlander51... RJ

    What appeals to you more?

It's the mid spring, five months till elk season boredom which tends to prompt some of these types of threads The situation is you've hunted/harvested elk pretty successfully with archery equipment for quite a few years. You're pretty good at at calling and have been in the thick...

What are your elk plans for 2012?

Three or four days in WA's early season in a wilderness area.. Then, on to a glorious two week adventure in Idaho (first year I've hunted ID). Gonna do two backcountry trips for 5+ days. Looking forward to it.. RJ

    Frontal Shot?

I probably (never say never) won't take a frontal shot "again" on an elk. The only time I did this was on a 4X5 Roosey at 15 yards or so in 1995. It was darn near self defense. Shot a fencepost (29", GGII 2219) out of my 72lb Darton Viper and buried the arrow over half way, dead center, perhaps...

What are your elk plans for 2012?

Hey C2.. the MT app process is easy.. You can download the pdf file on their website.. You have to send in a copy of a bowhunting license from another state (previous year) or proof of BH education.. Silly, yes... Good luck this fall.. Craig said you're supposed to call him in the big one this...
