120 TTSX Performance

I use the 140 tsx out of a 7stw. Most of what I have read leads me to light for caliber solids, heavy for caliber frangibles. Hammer bullets however says if you need light for caliber solids, the solid isn't made right. Hammers do get good reviews so they may be worth a look.

Running the ttsx 120 at 3150 using CFE223 powder and a 22 inch barrel. Have killed elk(1), several deer both whitetail and mule, and a coyote with this combo with no complaints. Put the bullet where it needs to go for a clean kill and get your knife and pack board ready.

Curious how you're getting 3100 fps. out of a 7mm-08 with the 120 TTSX. Mine are running a 2900 with a moderate load and 20" barrel.

So far, my experience with this bullet on whitetails is exactly what I expected, which is to say the bullet does it job when I do mine.

As for Barnes bullets in the 7mm-08, I like the little 120 TTSX, but I'm far more impressed with the 139 LRX out of my rifle. Nearly the same velocity with much better downrange ballistics and a lower minimum velocity for expansion. If I take my 7mm-08 after elk, the 139 LRX will get the job. I'm reserving the 120 TTSX's for whitetails.

I’m getting 3000fps with 120 grain NBTs out of my 7-08 with a 20” barrel. It’s a great deer bullet. I may shoot an elk with it on my next trip out West.

I've heard good things about CFE 223. I'm also convinced it's the same powder as LeverEvolution, but with copper fouling reducer additives.

I can say that using CFE 223 in my gun I hit the max listed velocity before I hit the max load. Actually had to back off about 1 grain to not see the signs of pressure. Have been able to run the Barns ttsx and Nosler's with the same charge of powder and no issues. Would give a very very slight edge in accuracy to the Nosler bullet

With 130 gr TTSX my best accuracy was at 3000 fps in .270 Win using 54.5 gr of IMR4350
5-shot groups, muzzle velocity std dev. fps
4350: stdev:
52.5 16.9
52.7 10.6
53.0 19.8
53.5 17.2
54.0 17.8
54.5 4.6
55.0 14.9

I got 3050 in my 22.5” barreled 7mm08 with the 120 TTSX and 50 grains Big Game. Had room to spare so I don’t think 3,100 would be out of the question.
I'm getting an easy 3025 out of my 7x57 with 50 grains of Big Game and the 120 TTSX. Like you said - plenty of room to spare too. No reason to push it really as the groups I'm getting will be more than fine on deer and I have a bigger 7mm rifle now for things bigger than deer. :D

Old thread but thought I'd post load data. I'm getting 3176 (sd: 8) out of my NULA in 7mm08 with 45.6gr RL15 using the 120gr TTSX. May be a fast barrel and/or tight chamber?

I would think a similar load could be made using Varget and would probably be preferred for reasons of temp sensitivity.

I have 2 lbs. of CFE 223 and 2 boxes of 120 TTSX's on the way to me as I type this. If I can get 3100 out of my 20" barrel, that might be all I shoot.

110 TTSX from a 270 Win and 130 TTSX from an '06 have done it for my sons on elk the past few seasons. Wouldn't want to take a hard quartering away angle like I have done with my 35 Whelen AI using various weights of Barnes X, TSX or TTSX, but that probably goes without saying.

7mm-08 with a 120 TTSX is going to be heck on wheels for elk for most any shot you can get to the boiler room.

I had a Sako Finn light with a 20.5” bbl and I was shooting the 120 ttsx at 3240 FPS with CFE223 powder and it was awesome.
