300 win mag 2950 fps at the muzzle
So I thought some of you might find these interesting. I shot a mid size black bear this spring, it was a sow of about 5’.
The first shot was broad side at 70 yards and penetrated both shoulder blades and was stuck in the hide on the off side. 92.6grn recover weight
The second shot was at 15 yards entered the chest and exited through the spine. Again was recovered just under the hide.
108.5 grn recovered weight.

I was surprised to find these bullets still in the bear. Especially the shot from 15 yards. I have shot a fair bit of game with the 300 and rarely have I recovered a bullet.

Good info.

Did you take photos of the wound channels?

Good info. Don't be surprised at very close range. More likely to get an exit at 100 yards. Accubonds are great bullets but they aren't super tough. If you make a good shot a blood trail is not so important. That's all the exit hole does for ya. You put all the energy in the vitals. Well done.

The faster the impact speed (Closer shots), the more dramatic they will expand, and won’t penetrate as far as if they’re slowed down a bit (further from the muzzle impact). I’ve had the same experience, until around 400 yards, where they tend to exit once they’ve slowed a bit (fired 3200 fps, from a 300 Weatherby).

Sounds like they performed exactly as they’re supposed to. Great hunting bullet IMO

Thats a really fast impact speed. Many cup and core bullets would be reduced to chunks and jacket at that impact velocity. Accubonds aren't a super tough bullet up front so it did exactly what it was supposed to do. I see nearly identical performance out of my ABLR's at close range, couldn't be happier!

I’ve had similar results with the 165s going 2730 out of my 308 and I have yet to get an exit. Shot 2 deer and a bear between 150 and about 375 yards and they all stayed inside the animals. The bear was shot twice and did have an excellent blood trail but I thought they’d exit seeing how it would of had an impact velocity around 2050 fps.

Too much gun. A 30-06 with 180 gr AccuBonds punches clean through a 200 to 250 pound black bear at 25 meters and 8 feet.

I have shot 4 large moose with my 300wsm and 180 AB, I have never had a pass through and I always find the bullet under the hide on the off side of the animal. At high velocity(under 100yrds) they expand and dump energy fast so very few pass through large game, at 3-500yrds you will start to see some going through and not expanding as much as yours.

A 30-06 and a 300wm shott 200fps off of eachother. Your bullets go through because they aren't hitting with the same energy as his. Btw after tracking a few bears you realize there is no such thing as to much gun. I use a 375 ruger with 300g dgx bullets. Shoot till they stop moving and bring a big pill is my theory.

I shot a bear in Ontario one year 180 gr bullet out of a 300-win, mag, at 25 yards straight on chest shot DRT no pass through. Walked up on him on the way to my hunting area was sitting along the trail like a dog, he weighed around 250 lbs.

That was the point of the joke, and is so obviously I did not think any hunter would need or feel the need to explain it.

There is such a thing as too much velocity for a given bullet on a given target, just like one can have too little velocity.

Too much gun and the wrong bullet choice are 2 very different things
No, it was too much gun for the selected target with the selected bullet at the selected range if an exit wound was desired. All are tied together and without context the concepts are utterly worthless.

Is a 458 Lott too much gun? What if I'm using it for rabbits at 200 yards? What if I'm using it for bull elephant at 10 yards?

Also, clearly the OPs selection got the job of killing done, it is only too much gun in his case if he finds the lack of an exit would unacceptable. It is not like he loaded a traditional cup and core, then wondered why it exploded on the near shoulder. Again, that should be obvious, which is what makes the joke funny, because in the end the bullet still performed well.

I’d say that isn’t uncommon. In my experience from a 300wsm the accubond will shed 40-60% of its weight when it’s close range (high velocity) and punches through heavy bone. That’s from a large sample size of whitetail deer and some mulies.

Always results in a dead animal. Usually DRT

So the goal was to kill a bear which he did, the bullet held together at close range which is a huge testament to the bullet. So I would say your context of being too much gun is in fact utterly useless.
