Just ordered a Bergara Ridge Wilderness in .300 mag. Being a bow hunter and not a rifle guy, looking for advice on what scope I should get and what power. Most likely won't be shooting more than 400-500 yards. I have a Leupold VX5 2-10x42 on my X-Bolt 7mm-08. Should I get the same scope for the .300 or go up to the 3-15x44 but has the side focus parallax adjustment, which I know nothing about using. Trying to stay under in the $750-1000 range for the scope.

I just ordered a VX-5HD in 2-10x42 myself. For me, it will be perfect on my 338 Win Mag for elk out to 500 yards.

Hey guys,

I'm in the same boat as OP, Just purchased a 3oo win mag and this will be my first hunting rifle/scope. Decided to take a dive into hunting and I'm lost in the sauce with all the different optics on the market.

I will be most likely shooting 3/400 yards with 500 being my max. Mu budget is around $400-600 but can flex that slightly if the scope is right. I will be mostly using the rifle for Elk and deer in CO. My understanding has always been the glass should cost the same if not more than the rifle but with modern optics I'm not sure if that is the case anymore. I do have access to Military discount with Vortex and leupold so some of their $1000 optics are right around the higher end of my price range.

any advice will be appreciated

-Mike

Both those Vx-5 are perfect for a 300. Flip the coin. I’d keep them the same. Sight picture, muscle memory all the same is not a bad thing.

I had one if those Optika 6 2-15x44s with the kdot reticle. Is a great scope for the money, but man are they heavy

If your comfortable with the LEO on the 7mm-08 I would use the same glass on the 300, its the old adage K.I.S.S.

I love my VX5 3-15x44. Mine are fire dot and one wind duplex. I have one on a 300 weatherby and the other on a 30-378. Great scopes.

You won’t go wrong with either choice. I like to have a little extra zoom ability. That’s why I chose the 3-15. Much more then 15 and it feels like overkill hunting.
