I went with a Ruger American Predator, had the barrel chopped to 18" and rethreaded and modified two 10 round AR mags to shorten them and make them 5 round mags.

Please share more info about the modified AR mags. I'd love to mess around with that.

I took a 10 round mag, removed the bottom plate and pulled the guts out.

Traced out how I wanted to cut it, leaving 4 tabs to fold over and hold the bottom plate (similar to the original). Used a dremel with a cut-off wheel and cut the mag about a 1/2” less than halfway. I then cut the “legs“ on the follower about half way up and cut all of the “extra” coils off of the spring. When you pull one out, you will see what I mean.
put the follower and spring back in, push the bottom plate against the mag body and fold the tabs over to capture it. It should hold between 4 and 6 rounds.
