Accessories for a newby

What accessories would you recomend for a newby to the SLR world? UV filter? polarized filter? Mostly doing outdoors photography as well as a little barrell racing and team roping.

Every lens should have a UV or Protective filter to protect the lens. Circular polarizing is essential for sunny days and also a variable neutral density filter for great effects in bright light. If you do night photography then a tripod is key. Feel free to call me with any questions
