During my scouting trip to New Mexico Unit 23 I found that 2 of the areas I had wanted to check out had bears in them. I did see plenty of elk still in the area but no deer. Did see a few deer prints though.

Is it worth keeping these areas in mind once season rolls around or best to abandon them due to the bear activity, or should it not really matter?

Thanks!

In areas I’ve hunted extensively (Arizona, California, Minnesota) it does not matter at all. Can’t speak to that area of NM though.

Get a bear tag if you can. Black bears in the fall are concerned about berries or acorns or whatever in your area, they will eat elk/deer calves in the spring but if they have habituated a specific area it might push animals out especially during the elk rut. Bigger bucks won't put up with bears and will probably move. It's different everywhere. Hope this helps.
