Until today, I'd never made a compression bag, but I found myself needing one for my down quilt on an upcoming hunt. In the course of looking at pictures to see how I wanted to make my compression bag, I stumbled upon the first video linked below, and wanted to share it. The second video shows a couple different methods for drawstrings that I found helpful when I made my first couple drawstring bags. I generally use the corner fold method for drawstrings.

Materials:
  • 1.6 oz HyperD w/PU4000 coating
  • 5038 Milspec Grosgrain Ribbon
  • 3x Ladder Locks
  • Gutermann Tera 80 w/10 or 11 needle

I didn't take any progress pictures, but here is the final bag. It's 8" in diameter, and a little shy of 15" long (was aiming for 15, but I forgot to add a seam allowance at the bottom). I'll fold and tack the ends of the ribbon down so they're less likely to pull back through the ladder locks. The lid is sewn down to the body in two small spots so it can't fly away in high wind.

For size reference, it's a 0 degree, 850 fill quilt--I would rather get hot and stick a leg out from underneath than have sleep impacted from cold.

I hope you find these videos useful!
