Here is a project I finally finished. Turned a Boyd’s laminate stock into a lightweight wood/composite hybrid on the cheap. Improved ergonomics to my exact liking and weights exactly the same as the plastic factory stock.
Hogged out a bunch of the stock with a router. Reinforced the grip/butt/fore end with carbon arrow shaft. Filled the cavities with a super strong poly urethane foam called Foam it 8 by smoothon. Sanded/shaped the stock. Then coated in a brushable epoxy, made by smoothon. The texture grip is JB weld, dabbed on with a sponge. The paint is duracote

Also the barreled action and spartan adapter are bedded in marineTex. Still need to cerakote the metal in FDE and this 25-284 is off to the races.

How does it shoot? What is the weight difference between the factory stock, unmodified stock, and finished stock?

I wonder if it would have been better to lay up a layer of glass over the foam and use a lighter foam

I like the job weld textured grip idea. I've been sanding down a wood savage stock and couldnt figure out what to do after I took all the checkering off.

This is incredibly cool. How many hours do you have in this project?
No sure, I kinda just half heartedly chipped away at it after work for a while last year. I bet if I put 8 hours aside to do another one I could get it done. Aside from waiting on epoxy to dry to recoat and sand. So no matter what it takes a few days of waiting, sanding, recoating. Same with the layers of paint and stencils

Really cool project, thanks for sharing.
Can you explain the technique you used with JB weld to get that texture?

There are a few nice stocks out there that could use this treatment.
