I have drawn my rifle deer tag every year that I put in for it with one or two points. The only reason I have have two points are because some years I will archery hunt general units and not use points.
If you are in the John Day area check out the Northside unit for less pressure on public land.

I actually looked at the hunting and trapping regs for about an hour and also have talked to a few locals that I know from there before posting anything on rokslide. Additionally, I have mapped out my plan for hunting and have talked to people about general bear in Oregon. I have looked roughly 4 hours at the regs the last few nights and actually am making a scouting trip down there Sunday and Monday on my way to WA for Turkey day more so for general familiarization purposes. I also am planning on calling the Bios down there as well.

Actually, I was referencing the "archery will be a draw" post.

I’ve hunted Oregon 52 years straight. I’ve killed 45 elk. Five cows, six or seven decent bulls, one good bull and a bucket full of spikes. I’ve also hunted Montana, Colorado and Washington. Because I don’t mind steep and deep for spikes I’ve drawn every year except this year.
deer hunting has gotten tough. Growing up during the peak of Oregon’s mule deer it’s been pretty sad to see what’s happened. I get a tag one out of everPrivate ground can be outstanding for deer if you know some land owners.
I lived in Washington for 25 years, came home to hunt every year, hunted Washington as well. Oregon is better. In part because I was hunting ground my great grandfather hunted, we kinda know it.
Last year and this, critters I had my hands on, one way or the other.
The more guys give up and head to Idaho or where ever, the better things will be.

You won't get much reliable information out of either of our wildlife bio's here in John Day.
John Day is surrounded by National Forest. If you are a bow hunter you can get OTC tags every year.
Rifle draw tags are tougher to come by. Oregon doesn't come close to Idaho's hunting opportunities. You can PM me if you want, I live in John Day

I read somewhere that hunting in grant county was a motorized sport and my experiences last year during archery proved it true, I heard quads and ohv's all over. That being said there is plenty of huntable NF to explore around JD just a lot of roads as well.

Tons of public land and OTC archery all across Oregon. West side is more private. Like anywhere, put in your due diligence and you will have plenty of opportunities.
