slow to scant as of today. A couple of groups are seeing cows and calves, no bulls. Low ceiling, fog, depressing state of affairs for most hunters. Pilots are reporting scattered and ungrouped animals all over the mountains, nothing for large groups at all yet. Weather on the south side has been shitty and wet. North side about the same.

Well that's not what I wanted to hear! Think the big herd is still up by the ocean?

The central arctic is rebounding from a decline but numbers are getting better from what experts say. Pilots from coldfoot and surrounding say the caribou are scattered widely in the hills not really bunched up yet. You'll probably see them scattered for 100 miles north and divided east and west until they start to group up.

Weather has been crazy and wet, likely has some impact on caribou patterns. Cooperation is not their common trait

My buddy managed to tag this guy the other day. On a haul road hunt.
Talked to your buddy several times when I was there last week, even saw him skinning out this caribou! Seemed like he and his partner were good dudes and hope his partner tagged out. Weather was poor and caribou were far and few between. I did a get a small bull on a fun stalk but hope to head back up to try again near the end of September.

Only bulls we saw our whole trip was a group of seven practically in downtown Deadhorse. They accounted for 14/20 caribou we saw over the 5 hunt days we were up there. Saw 6 musk ox over two days and a nice brown bear on the drive home. We had rain, high winds, sun, and freezing temps. So it was certainly educational for our first time up the dalton. We just finished up there. Out of the 20 caribou we were close enough to id, 8 were bulls. This was my first time hunting caribou so keep that in consideration. All the bulls seemed young to me.

We saw another 6-8 caribou but too far off to determine sex.

We glassed a ton of country. Density was really low from what I was expecting. They were sprinkled across huge swaths of land.

Larry B. Pretty much nailed the state of affairs in his comments above.

We just got back last week. Definitely the slowest I have seen in the past 4 years I have been up there. All four of us got a bull though. Still ended up being a great trip but we only saw 10-15 total in 7 days. Normally we see plenty, but we also normally go the 1st-2nd week of Sept.
