Both mom and dad hunt, so he didn’t/doesn’t have a choice.

I had 2 sons now 38 and 41. We started taking them to camp anout the time they could walk. I started taking them out of camp hunting with me at about age 5.

Wow, this is awesome feedback. I appreciate everyone’s responses.

I have also been thinking that a good approach is to incorporate the outdoors into our daily routine. For now, I’ve been throwing an article from Bugle or Bowhunter Magazine into story time. Little dude gets giddy when we look at the pictures of big bulls or bucks…either that or he has to take a dump. Baby steps.

early and often.....and make sure it is just as much about them as it is about your hunt.

I started my 2 boys young with hiking, camping, fishing. They hid (ate snacks and played on my phone) in a ground blind goose hunting when they were under 5. They come everywhere with me. I still do some fishing and hunting without them but most everything I do is with them now. They are both teenagers and we have a ton of fun hunting and fishing any chance we get.

My kids been on a few hunting trips… and scouting quite a bit. Lots of scouting trips in her little carrier before she could walk.

I took my boy hunting with me (basically just sitting in the blind) when he was 3 and up a few times a year. This last year, he turned 6 and had been practicing with his crossbow so I put him on my Excalibur and he was shooting really good groups out to 40 yards, like under 4 inches so we got him a youth license this last year and he downed a button buck at 34 yards which didn't run more than 50 yards before dropping and then this spring he popped a turkey at 28 yards and dropped it on the spot. He was beyond ecstatic!!! 100% sure he's hooked for life.

…And at what age?

I’m betting there will be a wide range of answers to this question as every kid is a little different. As the father of a 4 month old, I figure it’s never too early to start taking notes…

Waterfowl first yes cold, but lots of action. Then a pig hunt that was easy.

Took my son dove hunting at 1.5 years old. Took his toys and let him play. He had more fun looking for downed birds tho

I started late with my first, he was three and I took him bird hunting. He had seen me bring plenty of dead animals home and he took to it like a fish to water. This was the first he ever saw me shoot and the smile says enough.

I’ve always had them involved in everything and they’ve always wanted to be around regardless of what I’m doing. From hiking with them in a pack, wrenching on something in the garage to fishing they’ve always been there. Yea it’s different then doing it alone or with adults but I wouldn’t want to do it without them.

Now the second one was nearly two when I took him bird hunting. First day he was a little unsure of it all but his brother helped smooth it over in the coming days.

He went home though and within the week he wanted to go again. Never had another issue. There’s nothing like changing diapers on the trail.

She still gets out with us although I don’t take her to far offshore yet and she only catches small reef fish.

Her brothers though. They’ve caught nearly everything in the ocean here… solo and can talk hunting, fishing and 4 wheeling with most men. I’ve seen people talk about their kid needing help with walleye and trout. My son was catching (small) marlin by himself at five.

Just get them out there with you early and make it fun. They can be the best years of your life, plant the seeds now before their peers get in their head and you’ve got to try and develop a relationship you should of already had.
