I have rattled in Whiltetail in Idaho and Montana, but it has always been in November. I am here in Northern Idaho all this week. Will bucks respond to rattling or is it too early in the season?
Could actually be better pre-rut when bucks are starting to get frisky and curious. I once rattled in 5 bucks separately in a couple of hours from a stand on Halloween night.
I've rattled for years and have never had a response, sorta feel like I'm letting the deer know I'm here!!! Grunting has been good to me, when I can see them.
Best time to rattle in my opinion is right now till November 5th ish. Also found to have better luck when rattling from the ground as you can make it sound much more realistic.
