First elk load I packed out, I didn't know how to set a pack up right for fit. My shoulder handled the 97 pound, scale weighed load. And, I wasn't sore the next day either. I was just to ignorant to know better.

I don't know about carrying out an elk quarter but I have a spot here in NJ that is about 1 1/4 miles from where I park. I have killed several deer there and it is so thick that it is easier to throw the deer on my back whole and carry it. This spot also has a train tracks running through the middle and I learned the hard way that dragging a deer on all of that stone you will rub off all of the skin and about 1/4 of the meat on the hind quarter.
