First post, love the site!

Got the alpine pants a few days ago and really like them; but with the knee pads I am hoping my knees don't get bothered after hiking all day in these. Thinking about switching to the attacks (cheaper and water repellent too). Thoughts? Are the knee pads bothersome for any of you when hiking?

No problems with the knee pads for me. If anything they make me cold sometimes. Really liked the Alpines but I am going back to attacks this year because I got cold a lot in the Alpines. I think a combo of not having the brushed backer and the cold knee pads got to me on in between days when it's 40 ish and windy or rainy.

I would go with Chinooks but I chose the alpine pants since they are a little lighter with little insulation. I hunt August through November and I think chinooks would get to hot.

I agree the Chinooks are more comfortable because of the backing, but I also think they would be too warm for early season. Although I have not worn them in hot temps so that is my assumption based on wearing them later in the year. I loved the Alpines last year, especially with a thin base layer underneath.

To answer the original question, I would occasionally get some irritation from the knee pads if I was really sweating and climbing and no base layer over my knees. But it was not bad and usually you don't even notice the knee pads.

I havent had any irritation from the knee pads, im a big fan of the alpine pants. I never liked the fit on the attack pants, or the pockets on the legs. Alpines all the way for me!

Thanks for the input everyone! I am a little bummed that the alpine pants don't have DWR, I wonder why? Glad to hear the knee pads shouldn't be bothersome.

Kuiu response quote... "Thank you for writing in! Yes, the Alpine Pant is treated with DWR. If you have any further questions please be sure to let us know."

I did contact them. Despite it being said on their website (mobile at least), that the alpine pants were coated, they in fact are not. I noticed when some small drops of water soaked right in like a sponge. They are going to fix the website so that they don't claim alpine pants have the coating.

It still shows on the Kuiu website that their DWR is featured in the Alpine pants. I never noticed an issue with mine but I haven't specifically tested them to see how well they repel water. Either way they are awesome pants.

If I really need water repellency, I could always spray some on. I think I will stick with the alpines!
