Marsupial Gear Magnets and Iphone 15

I know there has been quite a bit of talk about how the magnets in the Marsupial harnesses mess up Onx on phones. I really like this harness and want to buy one but am a bit concerned about this as I use Onx heavily for navigation. Anyone have a newer Iphone and see any issues? Seems like the reports are all over the place with what is affected and what is not. I know they make the no mag version too, but right now you can't get it anywhere. I personally like the idea of the magnets however.

I have not had issues with magnetic bino harnesses and onX, if I get it close on purpose it can get weird, or at least really delayed, but in normal use, I have not had issues with that. I used a marsupial for most of a season one year, and lots of others, most with magnets.

My marsupial rusted through really bad and squeaked so loud getting NL’s in and out of it that I couldn’t stand it, there was no way it was acceptable for any archery hunting, and it was loud enough that it seemed like something could hear it well enough at 100yds to get a bead on me. My experience is not the normal, most people praise the marsupial, but it was probably my least favorite out of a dozen-ish harnesses I’ve tried the past few years.

Any harness with a fleece interior will start squeaking on the coast (with NL’s at least) after a while, but the marsupial was the worst for noise. The marsupial is probably the most likely to mess with nav equipment because the magnets are pretty big compared to a harness like the OV that has smaller magnets. The harness wasn’t really uncomfortable on the marsupial, but I felt it under my pack more than most harnesses.

My marsupial didn’t stay open that well, and was bulky in the open position, I always wondered why it was the most beloved harness, but most people love them. My favorite harness happens to not have magnets, but I never had any issues with magnetic harnesses and I have used them a lot, and have used onX a lot while wearing them… lots of people claim to have issues with any magnetic harness and onX, I’m not sure what could be that different

I had issues with my iPhone 14 but just extended my arm our further away and that fixed the issue.

I'm looking for a simple, no frills pack. I don't want any added pockets for rangefinder etc and the pack has to be small/compact. I've looked at a handful of them so far and most are way too big. The marsupial catches my eye because of the smaller stature.

I think a lot of personal preference and the binos you use come into play. You will probably like the marsupial, I seem to be one of the very few that doesn’t.

My top 2 are the OV gen 2, and the one I use and have no plans on changing is the stone glacier sentinel (their second gen version) the first gen stone glacier was uncomfortable, pulled down on your neck, but they did a great job fixing the quirks with the gen 2. It’s very streamlined, I can still shoot my bow with no interference while it’s open, it’s quiet, and is waterproof and very quick drying (marsupial was hard to dry out) and no magnets, which isn’t a big deal to me, but for people concerned about magnets and navigation, it’s a pro

Like I said, most people love the marsupial, so you likely will too, I am odd man out on this, and it probably has to do with where I mostly hunt, if there are a thousand people that love a product for every one that doesn’t, it’s probably a safe bet you’ll like it, I think marsupial is a great company, and I certainly don’t want to try talking anyone out of buying something because of my use case.

The KUIU Pro is pretty barebones and compact. I’ve been using it for three years now with no complaints.

I had the Marsupial with the magnets and they are strong little magnets. I didn’t want something throwing my navigation off in no man’s land so I got rid of it and bought the KUIU PRO also about 6 years ago.

I have about a 34/35 in sleeve length and when using the directional function on OnX it would throw off my bearing using the marsupial harness. It was affected out as far as I could reach with my arm in all directions. Just my experience. If you don't use the directional function it shouldn't affect it.

Not for me….but the magnet on my Ollin phone case throws off the gps bad.

Sounds like its all over the place. I think I may try the new KUIU harness and avoid the potential issues. I don't need any of the extra attachments, just decent protection for my glass. The KUIU appears to be about the most compact one out there atm.

Zero issue with 12,14 or 15 pro.
Magnetic issue with IPhone is Way over blown. I have a magnetic rokform case that’s WAY stronger the Marsupial and it causes ZERO issue also. I literally stick it to the roll bar of my Mule pro and run onx for navigation

I currently use Alaska guide creations bino harness. if I had to get a new one I would try the kuiu guide pro next and nothing with magnets, especially if you are using gps.

Running OnX and marsupial mags for years now with iPhone. Never a problem on the last 3 version of iPhones I’ve had.

I pull phone out - check spot and keep marching.

I suppose if somebody propped it on top of the harness to watch every step- then maybe that’s a problem. But I don’t use the iPhone and OnX that way

I have never heard of the onx magnet problem, but this past elk season my daughter and I were literally going in circles one morning in the dark. Both of us looking at onx on iphone. This was in a location where we really didn't need to use onx, but did anyway. Very short hike to spot we wanted to be at daybreak. Turned it into a much longer hike and we finally just sat down and waited for first light. We both were wearing bino cases with magnets. We hunt other places that onx really helps keep us on track and never had an issue.

Edit: I just talked to my son and he and his daughter had the same thing happen in the same place in 2023. He just put his phone in his pocket and hiked in without it. Now we are all convinced it is something to do with that area. Only noticeable thing is it is fairly thick timber and trees are big tall ponderosas.

You might be on to something with being in heavy timber. All of my hunts are in heavy timber and everytime I used a harness with a magnet it threw off my bearing.

The flat phones have 1) a GPS receiver (which measures position), and 2) a flux gate compass (which measures the heading of the phone). I would expect magnets to mess with the flux gate compass depending on their strength, and not mess with the GPS.

BaseMap (and probably OnX) uses the flux gate compass for the Rangefinder Mapping and Exact Distance and Range (XDR) Navigation (pictures below). IDK what the analogous features in OnX are. Any waypoint marking or tracking features are based on the GPS and I wouldn't expect those to be affected.

Persons saying "strong magnets don't mess with my OnX" may not be using the flux gate compass features.

My phone case has a magnet in it…
