My understanding is that most of the harvested elk are shot on private land by hunters whose “guides” leased the access rights. Lots of road hunting. I think the success rate for un-“guided” hunters is very low. It would be cool though to try with a bow. I’ve heard bugles and seen plenty of sign on public land in Pigeon River while grouse hunting.

my brother drew a cow tag, and was only able to locate bulls. PM me and I will provide more detail

Congrats on the tag and good luck! I started applying a few years ago, hopefully one day I'll draw! Where do you plan on hunting, Pigeon River?

I've been applying for awhile also with no luck, but it doesn't bother me much. I would like to experience it one day but it obviously is nothing like what I consider a "true" elk hunt out west. I have a feeling if or when I draw it will be pretty anticlimactic after hunting the western states.
