Hello Roksliders, I was fortunate enough to snag a damn good size buck on game camera here in southern Oregon, and I am curious if it is a mule deer or a black tail. I was East of I5, but not even 50 miles away from it and was told that I would see more black tail than mulies

Looks like a blackie or at least a hybrid and he’s more blackie. The ears always give the little ones away. The antler configurations are great indicators as well. That’s just my dumb opinion.

Its hard to say being night pictures but I would say he is a hybrid. I live in Central CA and based on his body size he looks alot like the deer we get on the western slope of the Sierras. Once you get closer to the Nevada boarder they start looking like they swallowed a 55 gal drum lol. The bucks I've killed in Utah also seem to have white tips on their ears. Could just be the age of bucks but who knows. Either way he is a hell of a buck!

I don't see anything, in particular, that would allow one to know exactly from the pictures. It's very likely that he's a hybrid because your region has so much crossover. His size, while really nice, is not big enough to dictate Mulie. I live in Clackamas County 20 miles east of I5 and I have big bucks on my property, including one non-typical, and all of these are 100% blacktail. I think the typical record is over 180 and the non-typical is well over 200. I estimate the guy in my pic to be "just" 160 to 170ish. STC_0025.JPGone to

To my knowledge odfw says anything taken East of cascade crest is mule anything west of i5 is blacktail anything in between is a hybrid. Same scenario with Rosie’s and Rockies
