When the cows are starting to come into estrous, will bulls cruise bedding areas checking cows similar to how a whitetail buck will cruise from bedding cover to bedding cover checking for hot does?

It's not a dumb question, maybe you were expecting quicker responses? But yes bulls can scent check bedding areas as well as trails, water sources, feeding areas, mineral licks, etc. They can also listen for the bulls with cows to sound off with specific bugling that translates to other bulls there's a cow in estrus in the area. Lots of things to look & listen for!

I hear ya, outside of treestanding both there's not much more in common! My suggestion would be to treat elk like elk, it's a whole different world of hunting & calling. One of the issues Deer hunters have when coming to elk country is they move way too slow through the woods & don't cover enough ground if interested in running & gunning elk. 5-10 miles burning boot leather everyday is common place.
