What would be good for me to use on my vehicles and when looking at vehicles to purchase? Maybe $300 tops.

I have the blue driver reader and have been happy with it. It connects to a phone through blue tooth. It can read codes, does live data for rpm, speed, sensors, etc. It can record data to help troubleshoot/recreate problems.

I think it runs about $100

Honestly... Whatever HF has at that price point.

I spent around that there a few years ago, and it's been great.

Live data, pulls up a lot of specific codes (and resets/clears more) that the sub $100 units won't. Three times the money, ten times the unit.

Your probably looking for something a little more fancy but I have a couple of these, one for each vehicle. They work pretty good for 12 bucks.
