Flying out of town for business today, but I was able to swing by sportsman's right next to the airport before my international departure. They were pretty busy but I busted out my postage scale and put it on the counter asking them to show me all their lightweight 300 Win Mag rifles. The options were few, with most other options weighing significantly more. Here is what I learned, photo's below for reference.
  • Tikka Superlite stainless in 300WM weighs 96.8oz [6lbs 0.8oz]
  • Howa carbon stalker in 300WM weighs103.0oz [6lbs 7.0oz]
    • NOTE: trigger guard weighs 4.2oz which I subtracted to get the above weight.
  • Tikka T3x lite in veil with bronze cerakote, muzzle brake, fluted barrel and fluted bolt was well over 7lbs so I didn't record the details, but I should have for the users here on Rokslide, so I'm sorry for that!
  • Leupold VX3 HD (mfg p/n: 180623) weighs 15.5oz.
    • my biggest complaint on this scope is the parallax is not numbered distances. just hash marks which I consider a big detractor.
  • Leupold Mark 5 HD w (mfg p/n: 173296) weighs 25.4oz [1lb 9.4oz] [too heavy i think for this build but it's a really awesome robust scope that's compact and has a 35mm tube, so i'll check if i have the room in the weight budget for glass like this.
The salesman recommended the Kimber mountain ascent but they dont sell that rifle in the 300WM. Otherwise, that platform would be a good candidate.

Doing a little further research but the Tikka Superlite still looks like the basis for my first ultralight Elk rifle. Still looking for people to send their lighweight mountain rifle scope suggestions. I want to be confident out to 600yards.

I know you know this as Paulie and I haven't been quiet about it but its hard to beat the vortex razor LHT for something in the 20oz range with marked paralax, good reticle, illumination, zero stop and locking turrets.

I've got the leupold vx-5hd with fireworks & cds as well as the vortex razor lht. Both 3-15x. Both have an awesome tiny red dot in the center of reticle. Both have a custom yardage turret which even i can use and hit deer out to 500 yards with. I will say with my opinion, the leupold has more light transmission, a way better button for the red dot (not even close), and a little clearer glass. It also has a bigger eye box as my razor is a bit more finicky holding it up to my eye. Love them both and would 100% buy either one again. The leupold also has a nicer custom turret that pops on. The razor you just get a custom yardage tape from kenton industries that you stick on. My next rifle will have one of the 2 for sure unless I get a wicked deal on something else as I can just order another tape from kenton..

Thanks for the feedback, this is very helpful. Those are great options in the 19oz range. Wonder what’s the best I can do in the 15-16oz? It may be that VX3HD But I just don’t like the parallax with no yardage marks. I could mark them myself of course. Just searching the market really.

If you are looking at the next price range down. Id definitely consider that vx-3hd and the vortex viper hslr. The viper doesn't come with a yardage dial but its cheap enough to order one through kenton. Really any of the vipers are at an excellent price point. Id rather have a cheap rifle and great glass than a great rifle with cheap glass. Its made a world of a difference since I started to opt for quality scopes. Now I need to do the same for binos $$$. Sounds like you are on the right track

Awesome, looks good! Let us know the shoulder busting factor on a scale of 1 - 10 :)

Not for sale but I had same desire 20 yrs ago and built a 358STA on a 700 action, #3 Douglas barrel, no brake, and a Bansner sheephunter stock. Topped it with a Leupold 2.5-8x36. With sling and 3 rounds in mag it weighs less than 7.5lbs. Shooting 225 partitions at 3150. It kicks but stock design and a good recoil pad help. Night and day difference when compared to the Remington tupperware stock. All that said, I explored rebarreling to 300WM but can't make myself do it. Rifle shoots too good to mess with.

Who loves their swaro Z5? I’d appreciate any feedback about this series? Looking for something light weight.

Or if you’re not going to dial, the vx3 hd will keep it so your shoulder has the maximum busting.
