Sig Rangefinder and Basemap

My sig rangefinder has the capability of putting a waypoint on the basemap app. I think its an incredibly useful tool that I have not taken advantage of yet but I want to this bear season for those longer, cross canyon shots where a bear may roll or run out of sight. My question is: Is this doing anything other than taking the leg work out of doing that yourself? In other words, can't you just use a rangefinder that doesn't have that capability, range where the bear was shot, and plug that yardage in any mapping app as long as your app's compass is facing appropriately? I need to play with it more. When I first tried it it was WAY off.

I use the ‘remote marker’ feature in the tools menu to do that without the Sig rangefinder. I’ve used it several times for recovering game and it has worked for me.
