Small gauge turkey

Killed my last 3 with a 20 gauge beretta over and under. I use the Trulock Winchester Longbeard #6 chokes. For a youth I think a double is hard to beat if you could find an older model like a Stevens or something.

Those Stevens are a good pound or more heavier than a more spendy Browning or SKB double, which would mean less felt recoil.

Stevens 301 20 gauge is what we went with. Put on a red dot and shoot 3" long beards for the kids.

I love my stevens 301 410 shooting tss loads. The pattern is super tight which I like. Taken many birds over 50 yards with it.
Funny story, I was about to go on a hunt on some public land with a buddy who invited me for a turkey hunt. He asked what I was bringing, I told him im gonna bring my .410. He laughed and made some jokes about his daughter hunting with a .410 and told me 410s were not allowed on the ranch.
Well I brought it anyway, and that spring I maxed out with three amazing Toms, all taken 40-60 yards with my .410 and only needing one shot per bird. Well he on the other hand had missed three opportunities on 3 birds with his 12 gauge, and the one bird he did end up getting that season was with my .410 when his shotgun wasn't near by. Needless to say, he and all of his friends now own a stevens 301 in 410 hahaha.
Now obviously a 12ga is better, than a 410. But my point being is a 410 can do work on a turkey, and is a fun little gun to use.
Everytime I go turkey hunting I want to bring my 410 but usually ending up grabbing the 12 ga just because of science and all.

I am using the the Stevens 301 with TSS loads for my 10 year old son and myself. The turkey game is changing.

Agreed - 20 gauge is the way to go. I bought a 12 gauge Franchi a few years back and wish I would've went with the 20 gauge.

For youths just shoot high brass 6s for your 20 gauge. You will be able to easily shoot gobblers out to 25 yards or so and kill them graveyard dead. Once they are comfortable with the recoil you can gradually move them up to turkey loads in future years.

When I shotgunned for turkeys I thought I needed a gun to reach out and touch them, but they will come close. I have shot a bunch of them at 5-7 yards with my bow and only shot 2 gobblers in about 15 years that weren't standing right at the decoys which I normally set around 6 yards .

Stoeger 3020 (20 ga.). Not expensive and an awesome shooter. Mine came with an extended turkey choke which patterned what I typically shoot like crap but I've heard good things about that choke and TSS. I just need to work through my Winchester shells before buying more.

Or find yourself an older Remington 870 in 20 gauge.

Bought a Mossberg SA 28 for my son but finding ammo seems to be near impossible. If I were to do it over I’d get the SA 20. I don’t think you need to go with TSS out of the 20 so you’ll make up the difference in price over the less expensive single shot 410 over time.

If you were to pick a small gauge such as 20 or 410 to shoot tss in a budget gun what are you picking ?

I hunt with my a400 but my nieces are starting this year.

H&R Pardner 20 ga compact. Its $150, made overseas but its a 870 clone essentially. Had one for three years, killed 8 birds with it thus far. Buying another one this spring.

I have a Weatherby sa08 youth 20 with a sumtoy choke. Originally set up for youth hunts, but all I use anymore. I would buy another in a second and have several buddies that have now went that route. I have shot birds with .410, 16, 20, 12, muzzle loading shot gun, and bow, but I will grab that Weatherby 99% of the time only grabbing the others as something different to do

My next 410 will be the Tristar G2 viper 410 turkey model.

Stick with lighter loads if you go with a 20 gauge single shot for kids. My m2 20 with 1 5/8oz loads is almost unpleasant to shoot. I can't imagine how they'd be out of a light single shot.

4th 20 gauge Longbeard #6 bird. This one was a 31 yards but it patterns great out to about 40. The 20 gauge is so much more pleasant to sneak around with. I don’t even carry a sling. One more thing to clang around or swing in the air when you shoulder the gun. These new Apex loads do have my attention but at $10 a round I’ll finish out using the Longbeards.

I just patterned my mossberg sa410 with a carlsons choke and tss 9.5's. Only shot out to 40yds but I was very impressed at the pattern. I'll be in WV on tuesday trying to fill my first tag with it.
