What is hardscrabble????

Hey all,

I have heard people say they killed a mule deer in the hardscrabble. Though I have heard many a slang terms for hunting, I have no idea what hardscrabble exactly is. Is it scree, bolder fields? What is it, thanks.

I always just think of it as talus or other loose rock on rock that is on a slope.
