I would like to add two side zippers to a kifaru g1 express--sort of like the urban zippy or the new mystery ranch scapegoat--but I don't know what kind of zipper to purchase. I was looking at the YKK aquaguard coil zippers, but I don't have any experience with sewing, sewing zippers, etc., so recommendations regarding size and type would be helpful. Also, if anyone here (knows someone who) does custom work and has experience with modifying kifaru packs, please pm me. Thanks.

Here's a link to the new scapegoat, the zipper of which I was thinking of imitating--not all the way around the bag, but just up to the lid, so that there are two 'wings', one on each side of the pack.

I just saw this.

I use YKK coil zippers (so does Kifaru). The aquaguard zippers are what MR uses on their tri zip. They are more water resistant, but I have not needed them before.

I would recommend #10 zippers and sliders. If you use Aqugaurd zippers you cant use typical zipper sliders. They have to be for use with the water repellent zippers, since the Aquaguard zipper is basically mounted reverse from a normal zipper. If you want #10 water resistant sliders, I have only found them through Sailrite. They have the zipper chain as well.

The main zip on that Scapegoat looks like a #10 aquaguard. A very good, and not cheap, choice: http://www.sailrite.com/YKK-Aquaguard-Water-Repellent-Zipper-10-Continuous-Black Same thing Stone Glacier uses.

Adding a zip to a finished pack is not a beginner project. If Rainy Pass would take the job they'd do it right: http://rainypass.com/packs-and-bags/ Using an aquaguard would be simpler because you could leave off adding a flap.
