20” Long Action Talk

Why not just chop it into a 20" 270? I have a weatherby vanguard with a ridiculously long barrel on it that I'm probably going to chop and thread at 18 or 20

6 or 6.5x284

What animals are you hunting with it? If nothing bigger than deer I struggle to see reason for anything bigger than 6.5.

You might look at a 8 twist 270 win barrel so you can load & shoot the 170 Bergers. I’ve got a 26” McGowen barrel on order for such a setup.

I had a 20" 270 that I was able to get over 3000fps shooting 130s. It was a sweet gun to shoot. Never did actually hunt with it.
My next project is going to be a .25 or 6mm in either -06 or 284 parent case with a 18" barrel and a suppressor.

I recently acquired a Remington 700 chambered in 270win. I have plans of using the action for a build and wanted some input.
Where I hunt, 90% of shots would be <300…a rare opportunity could stretch it out to 400-500ish. Understanding the sacrifice of a shorter barrel, I’m pretty set on a 20” barrel, for running suppressed.
Currently, I’m set up to reload for 30-06 so I’m leaning towards a 20” 30-06 build. I like the versatility of 120’s-200’s+.
Any other suggestions for a 20” long action build?
Anyone with a similar set up and real world experience?
For shots 300 and under I would just leave it as a 18-20” 270win and save money for components. 130s or 150s will be good for that distance easily. I have a 16” 30-06 that very nice with a variety of loads from 124-220gr and probably one of the most versatile cartridges there is.
Theres also the fast twist 25-06 option running 133-135gr bergers or eldms. Even cheap 100gr speers would shoot flat and hammer critters out to 300 yds
I have a browning BAR in 270win I’m going to eventually cut down to 20” suppress and change out the gas relief port along with a few other mods.

What was the load?

I’ve thought about it, but 280AI ammo seems much harder to come by where I’m at…I reload, but I’d have to start fresh with 280AI over 30-06. I’m looking at ballistic calculators though trying to figure out if it’s worth going to instead of the 30-06.

I have a .270 win that I’m contemplating doing the same thing with. For me, the availability of components and factory ammo make the .270 more appealing from a practical standpoint. The .280 AI is a great blend of performance, speed, recoil, etc. but it’s not as readily available. One day I’ll build one. But for now, I don’t think the critters will know the difference.
I have heard complaints of shorter .270’s being louder. Can 4” less of barrel increase the noise that much? Does anyone have experience with one?

My 20" 270 was a little louder. I didn't think it was crazy but that was just me going "yeah that seems a little louder than the other day with the 22" barrel." I also only shot it with ear pro, so it never really bothered me.
