Hello

I’m in process of gathering info on a custom, light weight 284 build. I have a 6.5x284 with 24” barrel. It shoots fantastic on the field and on the bench.

I have a ton of 284 bullets and brass. I have 2 savage 99’s in 284 and load for those.

I’m wanting to go 20-22” on the barrel. Carbon fiber by Proof. Mesa precision stock. I’m debating the action now. I plan on shooting 140-165 range in 284 bullets. I can get by with a medium action, 3.1-3.2” or just go long action.

Has anyone built a short barreled 284 or something similar and share what they like/dislike or what you would do differently? I’m currently looking for a Rem 700 long action 270 or -06 to be the donor (I am open to ideas on action and bottom metal).

CIA, Cheers in advance.

A Tikka is a perfect action for the 284. My 284 COAL with 162 eldms is close to 3.2 and I wish it was longer. The boat tail junction of the bullet is below the shoulder neck junction of the case. Mine is currently 24" and shoots 2925 fps. If I could start over I would go 20" and hope to be around that 2800 fps mark.

With a nikon prostaff 3-9 in I believe Leupold bases/rings - $400 shipped in lower 48.

Let me check with my smith. I’ll need bottom metal and need to see what options I have. Thank you!

Just curious why you would go down to a 20” barrel and 2800 fps? Weight?optimal velocity?Assuming that’s for 162 grain. Thanks

Mostly because of handiness and I'll have a supressor soon. I love the extra speed the 24" gives me but reality is that it is completely unnecessary.

Wondering what you short barrel 284 guys are loading up in your rifles. I am prepping my short barrel 284 for a New Zealand trip and have a few bullet and powered combos in mind. Just wondering what guys are doing?

wondering if anybody has experimented with varget in the shorter barreled 284's?
I have but I didn’t do much with it. Like 12 shots, 3 at each charge weight. 18” plus a suppressor, Lapua brass. I haven’t had a chance to get back out yet

The top charge was 46.9gr and it averaged 2661 with a 150gr sierra tgk. 46.6gr was 2641avg. 46.3 was 2618. 46.0 was 2598.

I didn’t see any signs of pressure. SD’s hung around 10.

I am wanting to try it with 162 gr bullets. I know its not ideal with heavier bullets. But I am curious if it will work. I know guys who use it with short barrel 308 and 160 gr bullets with good luck.

I'm sure it'll work, just a matter of if it works well/better that other options. Taken with a grain of salt, the gordon reloading tool projection shows H4350 (which I also have) will burn completely in a short barrel 284 with the 162eldm, it predicts a little more velocity than varget and the case fill is a little better. I'll likely play around with both when I get time but I'm assuming the H4350 will probably work better.

I found the same results on GRT.

I’ve got some 165 tgk and 175 eh loaded up with IMR 4451 to try, which should be similar to the h4350. Hoping to find out this weekend

That is good to know. I might track some of that down if the varget doesn't print good. Do you happen to know how temp stable H4350 is?

Its in their extreme line. Temp stability is cartridge/pressure/etc. dependent but in the testing that Hodgdon published H4350 is a bit more stable than Varget and both are pretty stable in the testing.
