Question for Robby

I’m heading up to work on my cabin tomorrow and I’ll be there for a week with no service. I should be back by the 3rd. Can I post all of the days at once when I get back? If so I’m in

For you and Raygun, you’re good, rules only say you have to shoot 5 days/5 arrows with no practice between the shots. It’s ok to “catch up” your photo stream as long as everything is posted by June 3 deadline.

Haven't been able to shoot in a while, so I took a "Day 0: Preseason Sight-In Day" today.

I'll be shooting at 50 yards, local archery range. Equipment is:

-Mathews Creed, 67lb, 28" DL
-420g Gold Tips w/ 125g field points
-Scott Exxus
-Bee Stinger 10.8 hunter kit
-Two piece attached quiver
-TT Smackdown Pro
-MBG Ascent single pin

-Kifaru T3 loaded with 50lb sandbag
-Rain jacket (I've noticed the collar interferes if I'm not careful/does this happen to anyone else?)
-Brimmed hat

Goal is to alter the shot scenario daily, be it time/daylight, elevation, heart rate, environmentals.

Day 0 (not for qualification). Sunny, calm, unsettled pin; all on the paper after some minor adjustments. Ready to begin tomorrow.

In. Same setup as last year.

Bow is a Diamond Fugitive
Black Gold 5-pin
Ripcord rest
Victory V-force arrows

Gonna shoot 40 yards off my knees this year. Listened to a podcast awhile ago where Robby was talking about shooting rifles at a tire rolled down a hill. I have a .223 that is a close copy of my .300WM so I can practice a bunch from improvised positions. Figure I should be doing the same with my bow. This is not going to be pretty, but at least it gets me shooting my bow.

20 mph wind from left to right.
KIMG1193.jpg

Calm. Light wind in my face.
KIMG1194.jpg

Didn't shoot over the weekend even though I wanted carp for my setlines. Saw a bunch of deer and put together a few more pieces of the puzzle for where I plan to archery hunt this year. Just won't have the time to go back to where I was last year which is too bad because I put a bunch of time into it and found some nice deer. Didn't kill any of them, but really put some time in and figured out a lot of things. Within archery range of a nice 3X4, but got in a hurry right at the end. Arg.

Today. Horrible wind gusting from 10-20 and from 3 different directions. After I shot I realized the arrow I am using has a ripped vane. Excited to tune my bow and start practicing now. Maybe should have done that before the challenge. :)
KIMG1205.jpg

5mph from the left. My group is good. Should have zeroed my bow.
KIMG1207.jpg

10mph in my face. Had to hold way low and left to get this hit. Glad it is over. My biggest take away this year is that my bow needs more attention to detail than my rifle. Switching arrows and tips really affects things. Should have taken notes last fall, or just shot this with practice broadhead. Not sure why I didn't.

Day 3. Right to left wind 5mph.

Day 4. Dead calm

Day 5. 10 mph tailwind. This shot felt the best of all 5 days, today’s arrow is the green fletched arrow in the middle.

Also, was shooting the 2smooth release and below is a pic of my arrow. I think next year I’ll be pulling the arrows each day rather than leaving them in - after thinking about it the group of bright fletchings definitely gave me a larger visual target and probably a slight advantage... All in all fun little competition you can test yourself and have fun with. I chose the distance I did because that’s where I am comfortable shooting from in my yard environment - I shoot from
This spot every day but beyond 80 I lose some confidence. I try to limit myself to 60 yards in the field.

The most interesting thing about this whole deal is seeing everyone's wear marks in their targets and their wild pitches as well.

I’m going into my 5th season bowhunting and haven’t killed yet. I hope this practice helps my confidence. I drew elk, bear, and deer tags in Utah!

Arrow:

Hey! Good news for the shooters who qualify. We've just added another level of prizes for the drawing for both the Trad and Compound division.

Rokslide sponsor Off Grid Food Co. is offering up a Freeze Dried Meal Kit for each division. Spencer Trippe is the owner and is also shooting in the challenge (and shooting well, so far). Thanks Spencer!

CBE 6 pin sight
Hamskea versa rest
Easton Carbon Injexion 400 with the new titanium half-outsert
AAE ProMax vanes - four fletch
total arrow weight is 420 grains

The shot distance is 60 yards.

Day two: sunny and calm. 55 degrees.

Day three with a helper:

Day 4. I took a few days off and got back into the challenge this evening. I am really impressed with the new Prime setup.
Conditions: 3 mph breeze from about 10 o'clock. sunny and mid 60's
attachment.php

Day 5. 60 yards seems to be dialed and the extra pressure of the one arrow/day seemed to help me focus. Right after this I stepped back to 80 and was all over the place. It looks like a little more long range practice is in order if I want to extend my range.

Day 1
About 85 degrees and humid but calm. I pulled the shot slightly left didn't seem like this much but just in the kill zone.
f89edfe9c1d2a9be2564bd4dfa100ec9.jpg

Day 2
Pretty much calm again. Shot felt great pin was pretty much in the center but it shot slightly left Guess I'll leave it and see if I didn't do a good enough job sighting in or if I just can't shoot.
0f4b5c4f5ddb874ee1be3bdaaccd045a.jpg

Day 3
I was finally able to get out and shoot again. It was practically calm but my pin was moving more than I like but I was happy with the result
26a07919334d3350ea5074d1c35aa223.jpg

Day 4
There was a decent wind from right to left so I held on the line of the vitals.
92cb14bef50e6c95c453931cd2d2c342.jpg

Day 5
Theres about a 10-15 mph wind from 1 or 2 o'clock so I wasn't sure how this would turn out but I wanted to practice in the wind. When I was ready to shoot the wind died down so I rushed it a little bit but just hit a little low from where I was aiming but I expected the arrow to drift left a little more

Hey guys,
I haven’t bow hunted since 10/2016, but recently got a new (to me) Halon 32 with the goal of extending my range for Western Archery hunting. Not much need for range in my neck of the woods with shots rarely exceeding 20 yards.

Here goes-

Current max range: 30 yards
Bow: Mathews Halon 32, 325 FPS
Arrows: CE Maxima Hunter 250
Release: Scott Little Goose
Quiver: Mathews
Stabilizer: None, but B Stinger slide on order

Day 1
Morning, hot and muggy in South Louisiana. No wind.

ba412b9cd71b88899eb10f918b6e1a97.jpg

Day 2
Morning, 78 degrees and humid again. The hardest part of this challenge is waiting a day and not practicing. I definitely wanted to fling another one after this result. I’m predicting a complete miss tomorrow to make up for the kissing cousins from the first 2 days, lol.

434903c0932fe7b8a48d1f9edd0f68c6.jpg

Day 3
Exact same conditions as yesterday. Not a bad shot, but my dream of being a prodigy at the 1 shot/day game is dashed.

9a872ce6ea8e9c27b1a4b58ab5e8d28c.jpg

Day 4! Still in the killzone for deer-sized game. I’ll need to get a little closer for squirrels or rabbits...

3653dc3fc399c73a0937349f6e134d1e.jpg

Day 5 I only have 4 arrows in this set, so I removed day 1 to shoot this morning.

ce4cd25d284082585cc3c85220edd72b.jpg

Takeaways-

My goal this summer is to extend my range out to at least 50 yards for game. Hunting here in the South, I’ve never hunted a spot that offered a shot over 25-30 yards and i haven’t bow hunted since 10/2016. I just got a new bow a week or two before the contest and haven’t had a chance to shoot past 30.

I’m happy with my performance and very confident at 30 yards now. I would say my 5 day group was smaller than I thought it would be. I look forward to doing my own unofficial version of this again later this year at longer ranges.

I also look forward to reviewing everyone else’s results from the challenge. A lot of you guys are WAY more experienced and proficient hunters than I am. It’s awesome to have a thread like this to help guys like me benchmark our performance against the “pros.”

Over the course of the contest I bought 2 new releases and a stabilizer that I can’t wait to get out there and mess with now that I can practice again!

Doug
