Unless you’re worried about one running off I wouldn’t worry about it. Both of these dogs were started on wild chukars at about 6-7 months of age. I use GPS collars on them but I can only think of one time when I needed it to find a semi lost dog. If they are running too big I just whistle them back in or tone them with the collar.
Good looking dogs. Are both from the same breeder?

This year has been a pretty piss pour year for the southern bird hunter. Haven't flushed a grouse all season and woodcock numbers were extremely low in my area, (and the areas i traveled to hunt). So we went and ran a field trial at least then the dog gets to get ahold of a bird. The puppy got to get ahold of a chucker and had a time running around with it for about an hour.

Just closed the season, in some ways it feels like September was eons ago but also like it flew by. Been one for the books, took our first ptarmigan and dusky in CA and then struck out on scaleys to end the season. As much as I’d hoped to get one it left me hungry to get back out and chase them. Chukar are still hands down my favorite, even when I trip and put a stick through my palm in pursuit.

That is awesome, did you pack in and camp for the ptarmigan?

I did, it felt more like a big game hunt than upland. After striking out the year before I took a scouting trip and found one right at 11k, it was an epic feeling to finally put eyes on one, almost better than taking one. The other thing that makes them feel like big game is the season is only a week and the limit is two, our deer season is more liberal than that!
