Hey Roksliders, long time Rokslide sponsor Steve Speck of S&S Archery is introducing a new pack line. I wanted to give him a proper intro so I spent some time with him today asking a few questions:

Robby: Tell us about your new pack, Steve!

Steve: We felt like there was a need in the market for a lightweight backpacking
pack that could really span the borders of being extremely comfortable as a
day pack and at the same time able to haul 100 + lb loads easily. We were
also tired of heavy packs and didn't see any reason why a great hunting
pack couldn't weigh in the 4lb area. We definitely knew this was a tall
task to accomplish but decided to take on the challenge. We built our
first prototype in the spring of 2013 and have been prototyping / testing
since then. The first pack, the Exo 3500 with Skeleton frame, will start
shipping in April of 2014 with a price tag of $449-499. We will be making
a larger 5500-6000 ci bag in the summer of 2014.

Robby: Who's best served by the new Exo?

Steve: The pack was designed with the lightweight back-country hunter in mind who
was looking for a more comfortable / functional pack and who wanted to save
some weight. The end product ended up being just a great all around pack
that is definitely suited for the western hunter who does a little bit of
everything, from short day trips to week-long trips in the backcountry.

Robby: give us a few highlights of the pack that differentiates you from other
competitors.

Steve: By far the difference in our pack is the very unique pivoting frame that is
made out of titanium. Its incredibly strong but moves with the body and is
still able to keep loads stable and secure. The frame is also very rigid
vertically so heavy loads carry well and keep the load lifters up high and
functioning. We also took a very simplistic approach to the overall
design; it's not overly cluttered with pockets and straps. Just enough to
get the job done and not so much you can't remember what pocket you put
your headlamp in.
