thank you for all this advice. the biggest thing im seeing is don't over think it. go out and enjoy the country and maybe you will find some elk.

For rifle hunting, that was my motto. I like to explore and won't sit for long, so would cover 10-15 miles every day. It's not difficult to run across elk covering that amount of terrain every day. At the very least, you can narrow down where you need to concentrate on from the sign your finding. Every day is an adventure, and you may even be blessed with some elk thrown into it.

I like to backpack hunt into November to allow me the chance to go deeper. Some areas work better for base camps though to hit many different areas.
