My chessie goes with me everywhere.....well...not national parks....grrrr. he just walks along in search of water, frolics, repeat. He just sleeps wherever.
Mine hunts with me 95% of the time. She indicates (deer) well and is great company around camp or while hunting. Breed is German Wirehair Pointer.
The first deer pictured she indicated something was ahead...then moved up to where she could see it, & it her, then progressively fell back to where I was waiting before propping as the deer came in challenging her...I dropped this hind at 20m, exciting stuff. Usually she justs naturally hunts 10m in front and air scents deer up wind. Top little hunting buddy.
Dinger, how much does your dog weigh? I'm looking for another dog since mine passed two months ago, yours is a great looking one. I'm looking for a mid sized dog that likes to ride around & lots of walking! (grin) Thanks!
Look at any of the sporting breeds. Gsp, gwp, griffon, vizla or even Brittneys or springers. Just take into consideration where you live. They are all about the same size 45lbs give or take.....the spaniels being slightly smaller and more energy.
I'll be logging the fewest trail miles in at least a decade due to Sage's age and failing hips. Still getting out on day hikes and hanging cams. But yea I'd never leave a pup behind on a hike or camping trip.
This is on the drive home last weekend .
And a few years ago defending our ridge from an evil gaggle of marmots......
Always bring my GSD hiking and camping. I feel ya on the NP thing Shooter; we are heading up to Yellowstone soon and have to board her.
Mine is great on the trail. The tent thing; she is so so. She likes to patrol around at night so being confined to a tent makes her anxious sometimes. Other times, when I am camping with a buddy who also has a dog, she has gotten out of my floorless shelters at night (smart little shit). So if I am going floorless it looks like her leash will be on and around my arm.
I take my wirehair everywhere with me until it's time to go hunting. It's great exercise for him and keeps him in shape year round. I've never seen another breed of dogs with the same stamina in the hills. So much energy.
I took my EP pup with me on a Colorado scouting trip, it was his first real mountain hike and he did great although I had to keep him on a short lease or he would have ran himself into the ground, we covered 6 to 8 miles each day and he was one tired puppy each night.
Great thread! Mine goes everywhere with me. Plan ahead for issues, it's kind of like having a kid with you out there. Drinks, snacks and safety. Make sure they know "whoa" and "here". Good obedience makes for a good trail buddy.
