Forgive the cross-post for anyone who's seen this on the one other forum I frequent, but wanted to share with Roksliders too with all I've learned from this site. Plus, being from the east coast, I'll be re-living this for the next year. It's a long one, I'll intersperse some pictures, and a bunch at the end.
I am born and raised in the Boston, MA area - and still live and work here. Right now, I'm typing this from the 13th floor of an office building about 3 blocks from the finish of the Boston Marathon. There's plenty of suburban Whitetail hunting, Moose hunting in Northern New England if you can draw a tag, but we are pretty far from Elk country (Although, places like Kentucky and Pennsylvania are changing that...)
After lurking for a couple years, and saying "Maybe next year" I committed to making the trip west this year. After months of prep, collecting gear, getting in shape, I headed towards Montana completely solo, on an unguided general tag / OTC hunt. I won't even go into the amount of time I spent learning to use a mouth reed and immersed in calling videos and the Elknut playbook. The area I was to hunt was found completely with my own research. Leaving after work Friday, roughly 2500 miles later put me at my destination Sunday afternoon 9/14:
I arrived at the trailhead and set up my "base camp" consisting of my backup tent right next to the truck on Sunday afternoon, did a quick scout to a ridge above camp for a couple hours, then it was off to bed to get ready for day #1.
