Steripen questions

For those that use a Steripen, how do you fill and sterilize your water bottles and make sure you don’t have any contaminated water on the lid/threads/etc? When using my squeeze or pump all the water coming out is clean, and if using tabs you can swish the dirty water with the tabs in it around the rim/threads to get any there… how do you do it with a Steripen?

I used a steripen for years in Colorado. Never got sick. I would just wipe the rim/ threads off, and try to never get the cap wet while filling. Then run the UV. It did always kinda bother me dipping the bottle in the creek. Sometimes I would let it dry in the sun before UV, or run the UV twice.

I usually just wipe the threads/lid with my dry old stinky bandana and call it good to go.

Generally I have a dirty bag I’ll fill and then fill my Nalgene from that. Keeps everything clean.
I’ve also just dunked it many times, wiped with my shirt and called it good. Haven’t gotten sick yet but is a small risk.

humangear lid. They are like 8 bucks and necks it down so you arent drinking off the threads when you fill.

I've used the Ultra for years without issue, never wiped anything.
