I am headed from Chicago to unit 74 for a Mulie hunt the first part of September. Can anyone give advice on velvet care? I read somewhere about injecting formaldehyde into veins at the base of the antlers to help preserve the velvet(though I have no idea where I'd get formaldehyde). I've also heard of taxidermists freeze drying the velvet to preserve. If I'm able, I would prefer to haul a potential trophy back home to have a taxidermist have it mounted here to avoid cost of shipping a mount, but not sure if a taxidermist in the area would help me get it preserved enough for travel. Having grown up in NM hunting antelope in hot weather I am familiar and comfortable with meat care, but I have not had any experience with any animals in velvet. I appreciate any replies.
