Rut seems to be just catching its stride here and the timing couldn’t have been more perfect! I first spotted this buck in low light at 260yds on a calm and quiet morning, which helped immensely to capture his attention with a short calling sequence. He locked eyes onto my doe decoy and began making his way. Surprisingly, he stopped part way to make a scrape, but another doe bleat had him coming in on a string. At 13yds I sent the arrow as he was rounding my decoy and thankfully the arrow hit its mark with a nearly vertical double lung pass-through. Thankfully he piled up within 50yds in sight to help my nerves to settle!

My biggest buck to date and I’m mighty happy with him!

Undoubtedly my favorite thing about the Midwest is being able to take my boys along for the adventure. Unfortunately none of them sat with me on this particular hunt, but all were able to join in the retrieval to be part of the memory.

Timber company land NW MT whitetail, about 75-100 yards with a 223. Had been elk hunting all morning, and switched spots and guns to go predator call. I saw him off the old logging road about a mile from the truck behind a locked gate, standing in the blowdown. It was a pain in the rear to get to him and get him out but managed to do it in one trip.

I have had two close calls with my bow this year that both didn't work out, so it was nice to bring out the equalizer. I first saw this buck at noon while getting out of my stand at 475 yards. I wasn't able to get on him in time, so I decided to do an all day sit (without any snacks!). I saw him again at 1:30 at 475, but couldn't get on him in time again. I repositioned and he stepped out at 175 at 3:15pm. He appeared to see me, so I snort wheezed and he ran in to 60 where I shot him. The 156 Berger performed flawlessly.
