Albuquerque Hotels?

Am heading out to NM for a elk hunt later this fall and was going to book a hotel in Albuquerque the night before we head to our hunting camp. I'd like to be somewhere on the west side of town to be able to just get up and keep rolling if possible.
1. Safest part of town to book a room?
2. Just plan on dragging all our gear from the truck into the room?

Thanks

Look around I-25 & Paseo Del Norte (Near the Cabelas), I believe there is a Marriot Courtyard, the Pyramid (expensive) and a few others on the west side of I-25 that are nice. Also the Drury inn is just a few miles further south and it is nice as well.

What unit? Might be better to just travel an extra 1 to 2 hours and stay in the town closest to your unit. There is higher crime near the Pyramid area I do believe...

In unit 13. Guess I could look around farther west on Hwy 40

Abq is a crime ridden mess, but the Paseo/I-25 area is certainly not the worst. Staying in Rio Rancho (west of Bernalillo) is not a bad option though. There is a nice hotel directly across from the Intel Corp fab that would be a nice option.

I would never leave my pack/optics/gun/bow/license in the truck unless I was sleeping in the truck or right next to it. I don't own premium stuff that can't be easily replaced but I sure don't want to be that guy in Walmart buying a new rifle and scope on opening morning.

Thanks for the input so far. Knew that leaving the gear in the truck was a no no, should've known better than to hope other parts of the country were better than where I'm living... :(

Pyramid area is great, but always take gear in and don't leave valuables in sight. Plus it's right next to Cabela's.

Stay away from overnight parking on Central Ave. That said there's plenty of nice places in uptown just off I40 and Louisiana. Safe to park there overnight.

I would trust these places over small town motels any day of the week. ABQ is easy on traffic generally so you'll have no issues rolling out west from anywhere in the morning.

Unit 13 is only ~1.5 hrs West of Abq, depends on where you're camping/hunting in that unit. I'd skip ABQ and just head to the mountains directly. You could camp in mountains sooner than an hour from Abq as well if you're willing to set up or sleep in your vehicle (just outside Grant's area).
There are casino's/resorts along I-40 too (Rt 66). Might want to avoid those.

We're going the outfitted route so not going to have camping gear. After looking west a bit though I see the town of Grant, which is kind of on the way. That a decent town?

Oh, I see. Grant's is a very small town. I haven't stayed in a hotel out there before, but looks like there is a Best Western and Holiday Inn Express at least. That's probably a better option than ABQ. Others are right, Paseo Del Norte and I-40 isn't a terrible area in ABQ.

I'd personally rather spend a nice evening in uptown with dinner/shopping as needed than finding a motel in Grants. It's not a terrible drive depending on when you need to be at camp the next day.

Honestly, Grants is pretty rough. I'd stay I-25/Paseo area in ABQ or go all the way. Doesn't sound like you are hauling a trailer, but if you are i would back up against something. Those bastards love to disconnect, drag it back, hook up and go. When are you pulling through?

We're there for the 2nd MZ season, so a night or two before that gets going.

Wish I'd seen this thread sooner. How is the Best Western at I-25 & Montgomery??

Fine. Honestly the crime in ABQ is a bit overblown. Don't leave expensive things out in view and have a great time. Lots of wonderful breweries and restaurants.

Oops I mean NM is a wild west 3rd world country. Please don't come here or you'll die!
