Dude, I have been chasing elk for a very long time. I caught a lot of them with the rifle. The bow is another story.
I have hunted all over this state in many units, often my scouting was getting there a few days early, sometimes it was opening day. The best you can do will be pick a place and work it hard. The elk in these OTC areas get pushed hard and can be anywhere. My closest calls to tagging out with my bow have been less than a half mile from roads. They are everywhere, and nowhere.
Good luck, have fun and enjoy every minute on the mountain.

Elk.... they are where you find them, here today - gone tomorrow, not here today -show up tomorrow. I hunted my butt off going out three miles every day and 3 miles back to base camp. Trying to find the elk. All the sign close to camp was 7-10 days old. On the 5th day a guy shoots a nice 6X6 literally less than 300 yards down the hill from my campsite in the same meadow I was walking through twice every day. You just don't quit. You never know.
