When buying a license you now have to have a Firearm Education Certification number? Is this new this year or do I not remember from last year?

yeah. My IL safety number is just a generic one. I just pick Firearm for CO and type my number in. Works fine.

PSA if you don’t validate it through CPW you technically are supposed to carry a copy while hunting unless something recently changed. You can validate at any CPW office I believe.

Ya, if you get it validated then it's in their system and you shouldn't have to enter that every year. Good thing too........I have no idea where my actual card is. Haven't seen it in years.

Definitely validate or bring with. A friend lost a day of hunting a couple years ago after being checked by CPW, not having it, and then working to contact his home state for a copy they would accept.
