My favorite Deer rifle cartridge is my 30-06 from the 1970's it's in an old Interarms fn mauser action has done it on almost 70 deer over the years, great out to 300 yards 1/2 in pattern at 100 yds with reloads just under an inch with factory. It likes the 165 reloads better than the 150 gr but in factory its the opposite where it likes the 150 gr factory over the 165 gr

On Elk the 300 Win Mag with 185 gr Bergers in both Factory and reloads in a Browning Abolt 3 have been the ticket so far both under an inch at 100 yds, hit 8" targets at 800 yards but my comfort zone is 500-600 yds

I really like my 6.5 creedmoor in a Bergara B14. I feel like the 6.5 really hits a sweet spot for deer, super easy to shoot, and the bergara has enough weight that it is easy to shoot but isn't too heavy to hike around with in the field.

This is a question I'll never get sick of contemplating!

Current favorite is the 270 WSM...a 140 grain Berger Classic Hunter at 3300-3400 fps is lightning in a bottle. Bought my 270 WSM specifically as a mountain muley rifle...2 for 2 so far.

For timber WTs in NW Montana and N. Idaho...my .243 gets the nod...5 pound rifle, light and handy for still hunting...enough horsepower to reach out to 4-500 yds in some of those burns/clearcuts if needed, but way more comforrable inside that 300 yd range.

Rifles, shotguns, and fly rods...a man can never have too many.
I’m running the same 2 setups 270 wsm and 243. Love them both and can cover a wide spectrum of wild game.

What load did you work up to get 3300-3400 FPS outta a 140 grain?? I’m averaging about 3100 with 140 grain accubond.

I got 3315 FPS with off the shelf federal premium ammo! Barrel sped up after a couple boxes and now closer to 3380 FPS. Chrono confirmed.

Rifle is a CA Ridgeline.

35 Whelen AI for deer, as they are hunted concurrently with elk in Co. With that said, nothing the 35 AI (or standard Whelen for that matter) can't comfortably do out to 350 yds or a bit more with a hand load of the Barnes 200 TTSX and a good rest. If it came down to it and it was deer only, 270 Win would get to go along because it is a better cartridge for longer shots despite my affinity for the Whelen.

My go to is the tried and true 30-30 with 170 grain pill.

I've got got plenty of other options but for CT,MA & NY whitetails the 30-30 has always been the right medicine. Kills em just as dead as the 300 win mag at the ranges we hunt at.

Out west totally different story.

You said it well above! The range the game is hunted at has everything to do with picking favorites. If I was hunting back east, could handily get things done with a 30-30 or similar. My dad's rifle of choice was an M99 in 300 Savage for PA deer hunting.

I have 2 rifles that I have taken mule deer with in Alberta and Texas. My .270 Remington 700 BDL SPS and with my Rifles Inc .280 Remington made on a 700 BDL action. The last few years I have gone exclusively to the .280. I will use either rifle for big game hunting I do also.

Here in Southern Michigan we favor the 450 Bushmaster or 350 Legend due to cartridge restrictions

Tikka t3 lite 270 wsm 140 Berger reloads. If elk and deer are on the table, then it's a Tikka t3 lite 300 wm Berger 185 juggernauts reloads... Wife shoots a Tikka superlight 6.5 Creedmoor Berger 130 otm.

257 Weatherby & 308 Win....just depends on destination. So many great bullet choices these days but Barnes, Lehigh, CuttingEdge MTH, and Berger have all done well
