So I have an older Nikon 4x scope i really like. I am wondering what the thoughts are for a rifle match for it. It will be used for deer and elk. I will most likely have an opportunity under 150 yds. But a shot at 40 yds or 400 yds could happen as well. Terrain will be varied. I would be especially interested in hearing from members that are using one. Thanks.

I only have a ta31 ACOG that's a fixed 4x but I hit steel at 500yards shooting 5.56 surplus ammo quite often and imagine with a good round in a hunting rig you could do the same with the fixed 4x.

I've used a fixed 4x for years and years among other fixed power scopes.

Bottom line- stick it on whatever general purpose rifle you like. The fixed 4x and the .30-06 made the American hunters' reputation on a worldwide basis back in the day. An '06, a .270, .308, 7-08....pretty much the field is wide open. Those old Nikons were kinda shy on eye relief...probably stay away from the hard kickers if you like to crawl the stock.

I've taken game with a 4x clear out to 350yds and a pile of stuff in the 200s- mostly with .308s but an '06 or two and a .300WSM was in the mix as well.

6x at short range is no problem. As in well under 50 yards, and one unlucky slick head was 15 feet. No sweat. Just shoot.

Thanks guys, eye relief is pretty good on this one. It is very light weight and very clear. Good glass for its age.

my first elk scope was a 4x tasco. after many seasons [6 bulls ,, 2 moose ,, a deer, and a caribou] i finally replaced it with a 2-7 leuie.
that tasco was well proven in the scabbard on a saddle and in a raft dragging across gravel bars. the critters did not know it only cost 19 bucks.

Thanks guys I am really liking this scope. I think a 7mm-08 would be sweet. :)

Hard to go wrong with a fixed 4 if the reticle is thin enough.
My brother took his first sheep with a 2.5x weaver at 400+; hard to say a guy NEEDS more.
A little Model 7 would be nice.

Funny you say that. After season ends here next week, I'm taking the scope off and putting a red dot on. For the vast majority of my shots, I would rather have the red dot. All are within 300 meters and I can get the rifle up and on target quicker with the red dot. Not to mention it is a lot easier shooting a moving target with one.
