there's a reason I've cut out all mountain bike riding on anything besides pretty tame single track

have had two buddies biff it pretty badly (broken bone badly) in the last couple of years; taking a pass on that

Had to revise my fitness goal for the year after an inverted downhill mountain bike incident over 4th of July weekend.... Tore my hamstring, strained my knee and did a good bit of peripheral abuse to my leg. So my summer goal of completing a marathon and improving my weekly fitness work to 20+ miles/ week trail running + 3-4 days week of crossfit became.... PT my leg to the point I can handle my 4 day September bear hunt (backpack/ backcountry) and be ready for my October solo elk hunt/ pack out/ suffer fest. It's pretty humbling going from the "I'm going to get in the best shape I've been in for a few years, and walk my 10 year younger hunting partners into the ground" to "I sure hope I can carry my 40 lb pack for 10 miles a day at altitude in the canyons come September without hurting myself again". Right now I'm at the f$%- yeah, I managed to go on a 2 mile hike with my kids, and my leg only hurts a little... point.
This is why I quit mountain biking. I wrecked bad one time and somehow only came out with bruises and a concussion. Have had multiple friends with collapsed lungs, broken legs, arms and one lacerated his liver.

I just put this together after researching a bunch of other hunting, backpacking, and backcountry skiing workout programs. I'm pretty active throughout the year, so I'm not really trying to lose any weight. Just want to get SUPER ready so that one of the few hunting-related things in my control (my fitness) is not a limiting factor. As much as possible, of course...

July was a good month mileage wise but I'm still a few thousand feet behind on my elevation goal. It's been a crazy year for me and I'm not getting nearly as many trail running miles in as I'd like. I feel like I'm cheating with the mountain bike miles but at least I'm getting some exercise miles in. I need to pick it up over the next little bit so I'm more prepared for the season ahead. Here's where I'm at for the year.

Trail Running Miles- 391
Hiking Miles- 111
Mtn. Biking Miles- 456
Total Trail Miles- 958 of 1,600 Goal for the year
Total Elevation Gain- 141,760 of 250,000 Goal for the year

I hope everyone else is on track and staying ready for their upcoming hunts.

@twall13, that is an impressive year coming together! I know what you mean about the mountain bike miles feeling like cheating, but miles are miles!

End of July update: I've been struggling through June and July. I'm a little behind on miles and more than I'd like on vert. Strength is continuing to go up though, so I'm happy with that. I'm going to log some more miles one the bike this month to help get caught up and back on track.

Current Stats:
689 miles/1200 mile goal
64,864ft /120,000ft vert goal

Well my 15 day trip in the Sierra's was cut in half (buddy and family got covid), BUT still a great trip and those miles boosted my July to 193 miles, 1246 miles for the year

strength training (up to the trip) was going very well, will get fully back on track in August

August was a bit up and down for me but I had some fun mixed in there. I took the kiddos and their cousins on a couple of quick backpacking trips. It's always fun to get them out there, even if they can't do the mileage I'd prefer to do if they weren't along. I'm tracking well on my miles for the year, and I'm right there close with the elevation gain as well. The next few months should help give me a bit of a boost. Here's where I'm currently at for the year.

Trail Running Miles: 444
Hiking Miles: 128
Mtn. Biking Miles: 530
Total Trail Miles: 1,102 of 1,600 goal for the year
Total Elevation Gain: 164,400 of 250,000 goal for the year

^ Nice- looks like the crew is having a ball! (pretty chunky Brookie too!) :D

This was out hottest August on record in the 130 years they've been keeping records :( Fortunately the mornings were fairly cool and all of my hiking was done then. I also missed out on a couple of backpacking trips I'd normally do because of the heat (but did get a few peak bagging day hikes in).

Anyways got 160 miles in for August (pretty good elevation gain too), got all my strength training workouts in too. Puts me at 1406 miles for the year and if my math is correct on pace to hit my goal of 2022.

I did get to see more sunrises than I usually do, so there's that :D

Hiking Miles: 140
Mtn. Biking Miles: 581
Total Trail Miles: 1,243 of 1,600 goal for the year

I have 2 main fitness goals this year, one of them is impossible (but worth striving for regardless), and the other is realistic if I'm very mindful about it.

Realistically, I want to train as hard as I can without injuring myself. I was in a really bad car accident a few years ago and shattered my pelvis and knee, broke my ankle, and severed some tendons in my leg. After all the surgeries I have enough metal in my legs to build another bridge over Lake Washington. I was in a wheelchair for about a year and had to do the whole "learn to walk again" thing. Leg muscles atrophied a ton and I was feeling sorry for myself and used it as an excuse to let myself get out of shape. I still have a lot of residual pain/arthritis/nerve damage. I really pushed myself last fall and was able to do 40 pretty intense mountain miles over 5 days. I was very happy to be back to a state where I felt more confident in my physical abilities. I'm just getting back to the 10+ mile hikes on a regular basis, and I just need to be careful not to overdo it. If I hurt myself and have to take a few months off to rehab I am going to be really upset with myself.

The impossible goal is to never have the "wow I should have trained harder" moment on the mountain come September. Never going to happen, but I can damn sure try!
Although I still have a few WA state tags in my pocket my freezer is full and my season is pretty much over now. I may be able to get out another time or two as a weekend warrior, but I've finished the ambitious stuff I had planned this year and have been reflecting on these goals.

I trained hard and didn't hurt myself. My training could have been better, but part of the reason it wasn't is because my wife and I sold our house a while back and have been living out of bags and bouncing around all over the place for the past several months. While here in WA I was able to get out on training hikes multiple times a week. We spent 2 months down near Folsom, CA and it was too damn hot to train outside much so we joined a gym down there. I was going almost every day and then I got COVID which wiped me out for several weeks. Considering the massive disruptions along the way I am happy with how hard I trained. Once we get into our new place (move in date is 11/2!) I will be able to train even harder.

My impossible goal was of course impossible, however I chose an extremely difficult unit (Selway in Idaho) on purpose to test myself physically. There were no plans we didn't follow through on, no places we didn't find a way to get to, and no opportunities we missed out on due to physical inability or being too out of shape to make it happen. This was really encouraging to me. I also brought home a nice bull, which is the best validation of all.

Hope everybody else made some good progress towards their goals this year. I think being part of this Rokslide community helped me in some ways, so thanks to you all for helping me push myself.

Good work Gents!

September was a good month for me :). Racked up 165 miles (1580 for the year) with a $hit ton of elevation- helped a buddy out on a three day bighorn sheep hunt (actually his father-in-law) and helped out another buddy on a backcountry, early season mule deer hunt. Both arduous hunts, both still have their tags, but still a good chunk of season left. Strength training has been rolled back to body weight stuff- pushups, pull-ups, lunges, air squats, etc.

October looks to be promising too- lots of days slated for the backcountry!

I had a lot of success and a lot of fun hunting in October but also had some additional travel days for work, etc. that took a toll on some of my goals. Overall I'm feeling great and I'm still in a good position to attain my goals for the year but I need to catch up a bit on elevation gain. I have a mule deer hunt coming up later this month but after that I'll be focusing on trail running pretty hard for the rest of the year.

Trail running miles: 596
Hiking Miles: 186
Mtn. Biking Miles: 592
Total trail miles: 1,374 of 1,600 goal for the year
Total elevation gain: 206,131 of 250,000 goal for the year

^ Nice (very nice!) bull

Good month for me; only have been out a couple of times elk hunting, but but more on the way :D Went backpacking with my wife for our 41st Anniversary- nice way to celebrate!

195 miles with a lot of climbing; 1766 miles for the year- still on track for 2022. Only a few visits to the gym, but that's pretty par for the season.

It's been a minute since I've checked in on here. You guys are killing it with the miles! Well done!

October shaped up to be a decent month. 110 miles/18,000ft of vert added to my year. I didn't have any hunts planned for October, so I opted for a Rim to Rim to Rim run with a friend. 18 hours and 8 minutes for 45 miles with 11,000ft of vert. Had a blast and am already looking forward to the run next year.

Currently on a No Rest November, so I'm working on doing a 5k run/day for this month. I'll log extra miles on the bike. I'm going to try to hit my yearly elevation goal this month.

Goal Progress:
1,013 miles/1200 mile goal
106,999ft / 120,000ft vert goal

Nicely done. R2R2R is a toughy! I think our go was in the 16-18 hour range too (we did ours in March) felt more like 180 hours :D

How much snow did you run into in March (I may already be thinking of another R3)? We did a 3 day R3 back in mid-April of 2019 and ran into a bunch of snow on the North Rim.

The only two parts that felt extra long were heading through The Box towards Phantom Ranch. It felt like the ranch should have been around the next corner. And then the climb from Indian Gardens to 3 Mile Rest House was the other section that felt like it took forever. Otherwise, I think I prefer hiking out in the dark. The rim doesn't loom over you to make you go "crap, I still have that much vert left?!?!!"
