Found myself in a position where I needed something more lightweight this year as I'll be in a position where I will carry in bow and rifle. I already have a Mountain Rambler, but picked this up to carry with me. Topped with a Z3 3-10x42, need to hit the range next weekend to get it sighted in:

Now I just need to shoot it!

I think you will be happy, I have the same in a 6.5mm Creedmore with a Swaro Sheep Hunter that will be in my pack for sheep in a few weeks. Spent all summer working loads for it, nice feeding and shooting rifle.

Enjoy!!

Will definitely let everyone know how it shoots. I'll be sticking with commercial ammo for now - I'm a novice reloader and don't have the time before the season. As of right now I'd like to be able to use the Nosler Trophy Grade 165 gr Accubond. We'll see how the rifle likes it. For me - this will be a great lightweight rifle to pack with me, but will also do double duty as a deer rifle I use here in the northeast.

Stid - funny you mention the 6.5 CM. I ordered a Mountain Ascent in 6.5CM earlier in the summer. Figuring that my scheduled hunts this year were archery elk, and then east coast deer / bear hunting - no big deal if it doesn't show up until the fall. Then I went and drew a Mule Deer (rifle) tag for Wyoming, and pushed my elk hunt back a week so I get a week of rifle hunting if I need it. With the Mountain Ascent still on order, I was getting worried and this turned into an impulse buy to make sure I was ready. I guess that means I have to sell another rifle or two to make room in the safe :)

One box of shells through it so far with a lot of cleaning, have it sighted in at 100 yds.

If I ignore one flyer (which was probably me), my best group is about .8", but have only shot with the Accubond 165 so far, and this is while breaking in and sighting in.

Do you have a Chrono? Wondering what kind of velocity you are getting using factory ammo in the short barrel. I wouldn't expect excessive drop off, but some.

I have the same set up. Had the 6.5 Creedmor, but just couldn't handle the HUGE loss in speed in that cal. With the short barrel. The .308 loses WAY less velocity. My Creedmor was shooting around 1900 fps. The .308 with a 150 gr. Bullet is shooting 2726 fps. Both guns were CRAZY accurate.

I use this rifle as my local deer hunting rig with a suppressor.

Interesting that the Creed lost that much for you.

Did you see the rifle shooter.com 6.5 Creedmoor- Effect of Barrel Length on Velocity: Cutting up a Creedmoor! | Rifleshooter.com experiment?

They got 2700fps @ 18" of barrel.

I have a chrono that I'll bring out the next time I head to the range... Wanted to get it sighted in and at least a little broken in first.

Talley Ultralight Low. Picked the Talley's based on weight and recommendations here - called Talley to ask which height they recommended for my scope.

Actually, I shot today. Wasn't too impressed with the factory Nosler loads, but, that may be just the first time I've Chrono'd anything other than arrows, and that it was pretty windy today... I'll do some hand-loading this winter, but no time for this season.

Threw away the highest and lowest and left myself with 10 readings.
ES = 91FPS
SD = 25.5 FPS
AVG = 2605 FPS
MEDIAN = 2596 FPS.
(The low was 2554, The high was 2645)

The info on the box has these rated at 2800 fps - obviously out of a much longer barrel.

Chrono was a Shooting Chrony Beta Blue.

Reminder that these are the Nosler Tropy Grade Accubond 165 factory loads. Shot out of an 18" barrel.

It was very windy today - breezy and gusting up to 15MPH, but I didn't manage a group better than about 1.5 MOA. Still feel that the rifle can do better and this wasn't an ideal test.

I still haven't had time to shoot any other loads, and now I have a total of 40 rounds through it. I would really like a calm day and a couple different types of ammo to try

Shot a couple more groups to make sure the rifle was dead on cold and fouled. One was around 1 MOA, but this was the best 3 shot group, who knows, maybe a fluke? Shot from sandbags, would like to get some more time behind it with a front rest / rear bag.

I head out hunting tomorrow. Hopefully it's got some success when I'm back in a couple weeks.
