I’ve been contemplating the same for awhile, ended up with the 6.5 saum and love it. I almost did the 284 on a tikka long action but ended up with a 2nd 6.5. I did a short barreled 6.5 creed for the kids. It will shoot the 143 eldx / 140 ab at 2700 with a 21” barrel. It’s pretty slick for what it is. Best wishes

Depending on who you ask, no 6.5 can kill a elk.

I'm just asking for my own knowledge, wouldn't shortening a barrel down still heat it up faster or hotter with a can vs a longer barrel?

If getting a new gun, id do a 6.5 prc especially if you reload. But the 7saum and .280s are sexy too.

Is that all you have to swap out on a Tikka for it to feed 280ai? I was under the impression that some machining was required on the action too.
There is a solution out there that has AICS bottom metal that can be fitted to some conventional stocks to eek out a COAL of 3.5“. Red Snake Tactical is also doing some Sako TRG mags for a Tikka, The action itself is limited to around 3.5” COAL. Most Chassis won’t support a Long Action Magazine for a Tikka. The few Chassis makers that do support a long action magazine for a Tikka limit that mag to about 3.48“ COAL.

Modifying the action to feed a cartridge isn’t anything I would pay for. There are some M 700 clones out there for under 1K that don’t have such a cartridge length limitation. I have a 284 Win built on a Tikka action that will run with the 280 AI. The 162 eld shoots lights out. I use the standard tikka long action mags since my coal is 3.1 to 3.2”.

160 accubond @ 2650’/sec
162 eldx @ 2500’/sec
Both at 7000’ would get you beyond your goal

I think a 7mm08 with staball would be very close
284 win yep
280/280ai yep
7-6.5 prc yep
7 saum yep

I think your goal is definitely achievable with a 20” maybe even a 18” for the bottom 2.

Pick your poison

I'm positive an 18" SAUM would push a 180 bullet well past 2500 FPS much less a 162.

I've given this a lot of thought and have been doing a lot of reading here on Rokslide, particularly the 6.5/6mm for deer, elk, etc. thread. I'm just going to run with my 6.5 creedmoor this year rather than trying to find that perfect cartridge in between. I don't plan on shooting beyond 700 yards anytime soon, and based on Hornady's ballistic calculator I should be well within my range to still have reliable bullet expansion.

I just posted add for a Bergara 30-06 that is super mild shooting, would work great if you walk 200 yards closer.
Alg22...I am now the proud owner of your father in laws Savage 257 Roberts. Nice rifle and am proud to own it. Would love to know more of its history. When originally purchased and any hunting he did with it.

I had a 280ai for a while and really liked it but sold it to build a 7 SAUM. Performance is similar and so is recoil. I think the recoil is extremely manageable with a suppressor. If I was gonna do it again I’d get a 18 or 20 inch barrel though.
